Decided Saturday at 7pm to go out on a overnight boat called all the landing they were all booked except for pair point had two cancelation on the tornado, so I told them to hold one for me boat was leaving at 9 pm I got there at 830 and of cores the boat did not leave until 10 pm o well, we stop about half way out the harbor met the bait boat and got some live squid went to long beach bait barge and got some sardine and anchovies and off we go dew west for san clemente island for the next 6 hours. went to sleep at 11 pm got up at 4am Sunday morning 10 minutes later the boat comes to a stop and were at the island in a kelp hole that I call calico heaven, as soon as the sun broke the calico bass bite was wide open for the next 3 hours we stayed at that spot until 12 non the captain comes over the speaker “real them up where going for Yellows,” we pull out the hole and what do you Know 200 yards of the bow port side Yellows busting on the surface so I pin a fresh squid on my 50 lb spectra 25 lb fluorocarbon leader setup cast out fish on five second goes by snap lost that one, worm Knot fail at the leader a few other people hook up and Threes to the boat.
So I grab my second setup 30lb spectra 25lb fluorocarbon leader fresh squid cast out fish on broke that one off too go back to my 50 lb set up and retie same knot cast out fish on broke that one off too forget this worm knot I’m going uni to uni and uni on my hook too, cast out fish on fought that one for about five minutes and brought him to the boat yea baby my first Yellow and that was the only one I got, it went 21 lb the biggest went 38lb one guy almost got one the teddy 45 blue and white but he had too much slack in his line and did not get a good hook set. in one of the photos you can see the Freedom out of 22 Street, good time was had by all left the island at 2 pm got to port at 8 pm cant wait for my next trip. By the way Ricky- Ray you were right stick to uni Knot it works boys and girls I learned the hard way until my next trip good times good people.
