Went to newport to look for bone heads on wed 5.14.08 didnt get none. Only got a 3 beracuda dinks and a few bass. So today we decided to go long beach wall again. Very windy and warm. Cool breeze at time. Got their at around 11 got half a scoop of bait and off we went.

Stay @ one spot the whole day today and caught a few different species. Calico and sand bass. Beracuda. Sclupin (broke my freaken rod!). yellow fin croaker or white fish (not sure). mackeral. and i believe a sheep head.

Fishing was today was on and off. Fish would be biting non stop for 10 mins and gone for 30 and back for another good 10 min boil and gone again. Caught and release alot of dinks also. here are some pix.

That Yellowfin Croaker/Whitefish looks like a baby White Seabass.....There's a lot of them on that wall.....We caught a dozen of them the other day, couldn't get away from em...Pesky little buggers......

Ya ernie its me, I pmed you last time wehn i first joined after seeing some of your threads. But you never responded, maybe you didnt know it was me. LOL I was hitting you up to hit up the lake at spring time for some bass action. I sold my bass boat tho, got me a ocean boat gonna cruise to catalina for some wsb and yellow's when i put my boat together maybe in 2 weeks.

Hard to tell if that's a YFC, WSB or Queensfish. angle is off. The last is a Sheephead. Just an FYI, If you are launching out of Davies and if it was a WSB and the last one sheephead, I hope you didn't keep them, both are way short. DFG is at that launch regularly.

Recommend to have this one your boat.

Print both pages and laminate it. I put it in a sheet protector and tape it shut. Great multi-species day though. those sculpin are great eatin'

ahh thanks for the dfg chart, now i can distinguish what fish is what. We didnt keep the sculpin, sheep, and white fish(wsb). We dont keep any fish we dont recognize or know because we dont know what the size limit is and if its safe to eat. Especially that sculpin it looks so dangerous but people say its good eating so i guess ill try it next time. once again thanks all. vince.

Awesome report!

YFC has a small barbel underneath its lower jaw. the fish in the picture doesn't appear to have one.

Whitefish has a slightly different body shape to it...and a slightly smaller mouth...

Juvenile White Seabass will go all the way inside in the warmer months, even in the still waters of bays and harbors and near the surf zone to look for food. I have manage to land baby ones while trolling inside the harbor before...

Theres a general consensus that sculpin is good eating---just be very careful when unhooking the fish as the spikes are poisonous. theres plenty of good recipes and info links online on them in terms of regulation, handling and prepartion. just do your research and you'll be fine. if you own your own boat, might be a good idea to carry a first aid kit that includes stuff to treat/ease the pain of accidental venom stings---just in case.

Nice variety out there. Sculpin makes great fish taco's. Beware of the spines, it's poisonous. Touch it and you'll be in a world of pain for at least a few hours.
