More bones than a graveyard!! Ninja session 05/11/2008

OK...so lately it seems that the not-so-elusive bonitos have dominated the fishing scene these past few days. Well, I'm gonna add my story to the list....

After spending a week on the east coast for a business trip to Maryland and Boston, I came home itching for a good ol' fashioned fish spanking!! But I wanted to stay close to home and decided to go out on the Freelance out of Davey's Locker.

6:30am I call the landing just to make sure that we're still going out. They told me "we've got enough" - so I head on down.

6:45am Like I said...close to home, I'm at the landing!! And find that we're going out on an ultra light...and I mean seriously ultra light load! 14 people!! Talk about elbow room!!

7:00am Capt. Norris Tapp announces that we're not going to Catalina for bass and instead we're gonna hit up the good bonito fishing right outside of Dana Point. He warned us that the bones are big, bad and BOILING!!

8:00am We set out the trollers and wait.
8:30am We hear the greatest two words in fishing...FISH ON!!!!!!!!!

Well from this point till 2:00pm, it was just consistent FISH ON!!! Move a little, troll a little, get hit again, cast out, it's ON!!! Most people were fishing bait (sardines) fly lined, I decided to get some casting practice in and used only jigs all day. And I tell ya, it was amazing!! I limited out by 12:00pm. Fishing like this only happens once in 10 years or in Mexico!

Mr. Sergio wins today with a 15# with a 14.7# close behind followed by my 13.3#.

I tell ya, I almost didn't go out this morning because of the shaky weather and the fact that I was a little tired from my business trip. But if I didn't...I would have regretted it!!

Norris is a great captain and the crew was all over the people helping make sure there were no lost fish due to tangles. At the end of the day...we had ZERO losses!!

Yep, you gotta bleed them right a way. Then you gotta keep them cool. Then you can sashimi it, grill it, stir fry or smoke! I did all four!! LOL!! I've got a fridge full of vacuum sealed smoked bonito!
