View Full Version : Mother's Day Sunday Morning in the Santa Barbara Surf. 5/11/08

Wingnut
05-11-2008, 08:23 PM
Played our monthly Hold Em' tournament Saturday night and with Wingnut Pug as my good luck charm... took down 1st Place when my Ace/King suited flushed out against Phuong (Blackwater) trip Jacks. Sorry Phuong, better luck next time, I own you in heads up!

Wingnut Pug says, "Can you tell that I'm bluffing?!?"
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture073.jpg

Didn't have to be at my parents until later for Mother's Day dinner so my buddy Chris (Tr0psn4j) and I decided to head North towards the Santa Barbara coastline for a reconnaissance mission to see if the Flatties are still on the chew. ;) Plus, I wanted to test out a couple of new baitcasting set-ups and field test my new waterproof digital camera. :D

The new "waterproof" digital camera... Poseidon can't touch this one!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture071.jpg

Flying along on the 101N at five in the morning and what do I see in my rearview mirror... flashing lights of a CHP cruiser. My first ticket in eight years. They even have you sign a digital screen tablet when receiving your ticket nowadays, no longer the carbon copy version (damn I'm old). I guess it's time for traffic school.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture-15.jpg

Hit the surf line in faint lighting condition and promptly collected a couple of short Butts and a decent size BSP. Chris was throwing the Ito Vision 110 and I was throwing the self-modifed LC Baitfish Silver/Sardine Hybrid. ;) The "grey light" bite was fast & furious and tappered off as conditions brightened.

First shot with the new camera... even got some saltwater spray on the lense for maximum effect.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture068.jpg

We worked the short stretch of beach during the outgoing tide and got a pretty good mix of short Flatties & brute sized BSPs holding in some nice structures. In a few hours, we landed about seven or eight shorties and about a dozen Perch with three or four being 13-15 inch Toads.

Look at all this kelp on the shoreline. There were plenty of it on the surf as well.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture067.jpg

Chris & I had a wading contest to see who can wade out the farthest into the surf.
Here I go.

It's Chris turn to go.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture053.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture065.jpg

Uhhh, okay Chris... you win. And I thought that I was nuts in the surf.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture064.jpg

Too many shorts!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture057.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture056.jpg

I was getting bored of catching all the small pancakes so decided to try and take some underwater pics with the next Butt that I pull in. Didn't come out too well having to hold the camera under water & snapping away blind.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture062.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture061.jpg

You can kinda see the Butt with the LC.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture063.jpg

Anyways, no legal Butts today so I'm just trying to make this report as interesting as possible. ;) Maybe next week I'll have better luck!
Final tally (2 anglers) = 15 BSPs and 11 Short Butts.

DVL Smackdown, here I come!

Have a fantastic Mother's Day everybody! :D

Nice going out there Arthur and Chris. Very nice grade on the "slabs."

Arthur, in most of your surf fishing reports, I see you wading deep with your reels submerged in the water. You probably know this by now, but if a fishing reels if submerged in the saltwater, the fine sand particles that float around in surf zone will end up getting into the reel and will cause for a rough feeling sooner than later. Moreover, the sand and saltwater will rage havoc on the drive and pinion gears, bearings and many other components of a reel.

Sand particles will stick to the oils and grease inside the reel and even if you were to completely break down the reel, clean it and repack the entire the assembly, the reel will never be as smooth as before. Trust me on this, I've made the mistake when I was a youngster surf fishing with the old school (blue colored) Daiwa Millionaire II.

Thanks again for the report and once I get some time, lets plan a trip together. If you like fishing for Calicos, I know a few spots that should blow up with 3-4 pounders and the occasional 5 pounder soon as the water temps are rising to the ideal range.

Not being a hater but a word of caution. I know it's all fun and games but that is crazy. I'm not even worried about the gear but going to neck high water around kelp. That is just asking for trouble. You never know whats going to get wrap around you or if there's a hole on the next step. It's good that you guys had some fun but wouldn't want to see anyone come back to shore not breathing.....

Once again... I thank you young Kevin.

Now that's how you wade in the surf. Haha. Looks like a lot of fun.
90% of the time, I never have to wade in past my waist in the surf. Most of the action is closer to shore. We were just having a little fun.

You're right about the reel & the saltwater Sinjin. A couple of my Calcutta DC's never felt the same even after I got them completely serviced. I've been trying to treat my gear a little better lately, but bad habits are hard to break. I pulled a few Calicos out of the surf before and now in search of the elusive surf Striper & White Sea Bass. Can you hook me up with one of those bad boys?!? ;)

Great Job out there guys! You guys are crazy to go out that far with your waders on. Thanks for the report. Awesome as always! Those underwater shots were pretty cool!
Alex
The surf conditions was quite mild that morning which allowed us to wander further out. I didn't really know how to take underwater shots at all. I just stuck the camera in the water and snapped a few pics. I'll try to get some better shots next time.

Nice report, nuts to go out there reeling in bloody fish with all the recent reports of shark attacks.
We did see a few Sharks in the water. A couple of Smooth Hounds & some Shovelnose... harmless. If you noticed in one of the pictures I took of Chris in the water, there was a Dolphin surfaced in the background. We did see a few of those too, and a curious Sea Lion that came up close to investigate the two brazen fishermen.

you should see him when he catches a fish. he'll throw his reel into the sand to take pictures!
Hey, but I quickly wash it off in the surf after it's been in the sand.

way to go arthur! those perch are huge!
Yeah Ernie, usually you would catch a handful of dinks and then nail a big one. But that morning, every one of those Perch were big slabs. I think I'll make a special trip up there with just my fly rod. ;)

Oh man, how cold was that water? I'm getting chills seeing Chris out there. I guess you gotta go where the fish are...haha
The water was quite cold... Chris is hardcore going in without any waders.

Great report as always, sucks about the ticket. 8 years, I guess you're due.
Yeah, I'm overdue... as the matter of fact, the last ticket I got wasn't even with my car, I was on my motorcycle. Money out the window and not looking forward to traffic school.

you both are goofs, great fishing. Looks like Chris never fully recovered from the accident.
Which accident are you referring too... Chris have had several.

It was a very low tide on Sunday and the area we were wading in had little or no surf at all. Even though I'm an expert swimmer and often rehearse my wader escape routine, I would have never push that far out in higher surf conditions. Always know your limits out there.

LMAO you guys are hilarious. Love the pic of Chris neck deep in water.
Nice job on the slab perch.
A Sea Lion actually came within 20 feet of Chris while he was out there. It was funny because he hooked up to a small Hali and was trying to reel it in with the rod help high over his head while backing up towards the shore, very comical.

Barely any surf at all, most of it broke right at the shore line. Hey, you can't pick & choose the size of the Flat Boys, Poseidon does that. ;)
Winning the tournament is great, the speeding ticket won't hurt a bit. Get ready for Vegas Vince, I'm going to get into the money at the W.S.O.P. main event this year, just watch.

It is the Olympus Stylus 1030SW.

I don't keep anything I catch in the surf, but I've heard that Surf perch are great eating. Kinda like saltwater Crappies. Try not to keep any between February & May while they're spawning, when you run into a lot of those big pregnant females. Yes, Gary... there's a few people out there just like us in the fishing world, who enjoys the sport with an occasional touch of madness. ;)
It was a really low tide on Sunday with very little surf and slow moving swells. You should get some waders & hit the surf Gary, I bet you'd be a natural at it.

Don't worry man, the Lakers will take the next two... if Kobe is healthy.

That Halibut dinner Sunday night at mom & dad's was da bomb!

The rods are E21 Boyd Duckett Classic Gold Carrot Stix.
I have a 7'2" medium with a Luna 203 and a 7'6" medium heavy with a Luna 253.

You're one lucky SOB Art! I was waiting for that one hand to nail you. Pocket Jacks, I knew you had Ace King or Ace Queen and I had the better hand before the flop. You hit runner, runner spades and flushed out, that is just plain SICK! The rich just gets richer as they say, but I can't complain with $2500 bucks in my pocket. Good luck when you go to Vegas in July my friend, I know you and Nhan will represent us well at the main event. As for the fishing on Sunday, no surprise that you had a good day. I'm still waiting for that skunk report (haha). We have to head out in the next couple of weeks now that I'm all done moving. Ask Dana if he wants to go with us to Pyramid in the next couple of weeks on my boat. Good luck this Saturday at DVL, you and T/O better win the damn thing for Team 57!!!

Hey Phuong....

I'm ready...... let's go!

Wow those are some perch toads. Looks like another great day on the water for you. Hopefully you get some bigger butts next time. I hope you are still sacraficing the hermit crabs to poseidon. Careful about the 20 inch curse. Thanks for the awesome report.
I think I'm due for another fly fishing surf trip. ;)
I no longer sacrifice Hermit Crabs to Poseidon... Dungeness and Stone Crabs is what I've been offering. If that doesn't work out, there's always Lobsters. :Envious:

Reports are fun to write when you really have some substance to write about. ;) It is a bummer, but I was overdue for a ticket.
Hope you had a nice birthday weekend Aaron.

I always carry a left and a right handed set-ups with me when surf fishing. I'm comfortable with both and switch off as my hands & arms gets tired.

Sorry for the bad beat Phuong, I have a habit of doing that to people.
Spend your winnings wisely my friend. ;) I can't wait until the W.S.O.P. main event in July. Suite already booked at the Rio and we're ready to rock! If you're waiting for a Skunk report from me... you might have to wait a long time buddy. :D I already talked to Dana about all of us heading out to fish for some Stripers at Pyramid. He's never been Striper fishing before so we have to initiate him with some Striper BLOOD! :Envious: As for the Smackdown this Saturday, I'm just along for the ride. Never fished DVL before so I will be following T/O & Kewlwhip's lead all day, maybe we'll get lucky. ;)

We're going Dana, SOON! Phuong is prepping the Striper killing machine for your first Striper trip.
BTW - I would like to donate the "OLD" digital camera for the next raffle. No need to thank me... I'm just that kinda guy.

Nice job on covering the spread (again) last night.
I'm hoping that Lakers lose in Utah so you will take me to the seventh game. :D

Let's see.

Work all day, Poker champ that night, able to post to reports when only Owls, Coyotes and Skunks are on the prowl, make a Nascar early morning run up north, "With a slight Delay to ask the Fuzz" for some local fishing tips, tried free diving techniques with the pole and new camera, catch fish, and some nice ones at that and make it back to an unforgivable miss had you not made it for MOTHERS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had Better get some rest this week!

Great report and energy as always.

The fight in those Perches were amazing, I actually thought one of them was a Hali for a bit.

I'll be at DVL on Saturday for the Smackdown Trout Derby. I hope to shake the rust off quickly since I haven't fished for Trout much this year.
I was watching the game and having dinner with Dana last night and I told him, not to worry about the Lakers tonight, it's money in the bank and that's exactly how it turned out. If the series makes it back to L.A. for the seventh game, you and Phuong can fight it out to see who will go with me. ;)

You gotta make it to the Legends event in August Phuong, talk about lots of FOOD.
I can't wait to get Dana on a hot Striper bite at Pyramid.

Monster freaking Slabs !!!!Nice job Arthur.....Your a savage in the surf these days. I'll be hunting the butts on sunday with some new baits I just bought and want to try.Too bad the LC saltwater series has been discontinued but I found some baits that should do the same job.

Mike, I bet I know what your replacement for the LC is. But I don't think they make that lure in your favorite Candy pattern. ;) Shoot me a PM and let me know how you did Sunday in the surf. I took today off and went golfing instead. Spent all day yesterday roasting in the sun at DVL... I'm all fished out! :D

Where do we go to see your golf report?

Are they as entertaining and in detail as your fishing Reports? J/k

Hahaha, the report is on another board Steve. ;) :Envious:

You know that I would take fishing over golf in an instant, but I was invited to play Riviera CC today... enough said. ;) Wow... I walked the same fairways like some of the great golfing legends did today. Historic course with lots of tradition. But I have to ask... what's up with that par 3 with a bunker in the middle?!? I was on in one and four putted for a double bogey!
