Revisited my favorite fishing location with a different tactic in mind. I went out this time to try fishing from as much beach as I could find within the Harbor. I arrived on the peninsula side and was able to find parking on Alvarado St. near Bay Isle. The spot had previously produced some nice Spotties for me from the boat but now I was on the beach.

First Cast was a disaster with a Bird Nest big enough for an Osprey to lay her eggs on. Spend 20 minutes cutting the mess out of my newly spooled reel and loose about 20 yards of line.:bang:

Retie and cast again to get snagged and snap off the swimbait.:bang:

Retie and cast for Fish on only to find out that I had not actually found the proper piece of line that was still intact with the spool so off goes whatever it was with my swimbait in its mouth along with another 20 yards of line.:beat:

I Have now spent about 45 minutes of very frustrating time messing with the gear and thing about giving up on this great new exploratory trip I had planned and go back to how I usually fish the harbor from the public docks!!

My 4th cast of what has now been an Hour produced this guy.

As I was taking a shot of his release he spanked his tail and splashed sand allover the front of my lens of the DigiCam. Did my best to clean up the mess.

Next 10 minutes produced 2 smaller ones:

Caught 2 more shorts in the same area but the camera had issues due to the sand in the lens area.

Moved to Balboa Island and eventually worked the whole island again from shore and when the opportunity arose jumped on the legal platforms to pick up a nice sargo, 2 more shorts and finished the day with a bat!

For experimenting with a new technique I fell it was a successful day and was disappointed to not pick up a targeted Spottie!!

Darn Steve, the way you described the first 45 minutes... I even got frustrated. Been there, done that!

Anyway, glad you got into some good action at least. Another couple of hours and I'll be hitting the surf myself. ;)

We're going to hook up & fish together here in the next couple of weeks my friend. :D

Hey way to go Stevo. Once again, you were able to catch some fish. I am starting to think you need to take us and show us how to catch the Halibut. Sorry to hear of your troubles, though it makes me laugh thinking about it and imagining you in the moment. Espaecially the line that was no longer secured to the reel. LOL.

I know what it feels like with those baitcasters. I could not cast mine to save my life when I first got it.

But nice variety of fish.

nice! what a great day for butts! i still need to land me a legal. :)

Thanks, Some times you get a new idea in your head to try something new and it works out . The first one was just legal but given back to the gods for keeping me on my mission after the previous difficulties at the start.

Thanks Arthor,

To bounce back after the previous week for a skunk in your surf territory it was great to try again something new and have some success. See Ya Soon in my Back yard.

Now Eddie although I caught a few dinks and you are all on a dry spell 1 of those 40+ lb Butts are way beyond my catching the juveniles and I feed them to get Big for them to leave the harbor sanctuary for future catching.

Was supposed to be a PM Sorry folks!!!!

Hope all were able to get some Intel from what was supposed to be a PM. Those that got to view it good luck in the Harbor and look forward to meeting you there.

What a great day...thanks for the tips!

Hope to see you a 1 of the spots!!!!!

Great job!

Big Butts are nice for filling the fridge, butt I prefer to look at the smaller ones as I fish for the larger ones.

QUOTE=vagabond;188725]nice going on the fish, and keeping your cool with the birds nest...
Limited time on the new reel but previous trips I had it down. Just got it re spooled and did not check the settings before casting and that was the problem. after I finally got a piece of line that was still attached to the spool no problem.

Nice work on all the flatties!

Thanks TJ

Have been looking at some of your bass reports!!! Keep up the great fishing!!!!
It's soooo nice to see the swim bait action. Great stuff!

Starting to love them my self and figuring out how to catch more species on them.

Great job out there :thumb:

Thanks.

I know what it feels like with those baitcasters. I could not cast mine to save my life when I first got it.

It's getting easier with experience.

But nice variety of fish.

Too bad no spotties but they will be waiting on you the next time..

The Spotties are there as I ran into another guy using the same approach from the shore hoping to get some Butt action and his only success was on a few spotties.

Nice report & photos.Thanks.Looks like it was a really low tide.

The hot action at the beginning was at a minus 0.8 tide and I feel I missed out on some better action in the channel while I was fussing with my rig issues. I think it concentrated them in the small area.
