Are you looking at chartering the entire boat or just go on an open party boat? Are you looking at 1/2 day, 3/4 day, twilight, overnight? What kind of trip. Where do you live? There's lot's of landings between San Diego and Oxnard. Some more info would help.

Welcome to the Board. If you've never been saltwater fishing, I would go on a 1/2 day or something to make sure it's something you really want to do. As for charters, everyone has their own favorite charter boat so the answers you'll get are purely subjective. Personally, I really like the Shogun out of San D. Also, Gary Nordby (cap't) was a favorite of my dad's. I think he's on the Legacy now.
Good Luck

A lot of people new to the sport start out with 1/2 and 3/4 day trips. Try a few local boats just to get your feet wet.

Like Kozaki said, everybody is going to have differing opinions regarding the best charter boats.

If you want more info, send me a PM and I'll be happy to help!

The City of Redondo and the Redondo Special out of Redondo sportfishing have been pretty good.

The Icon out of Long Beach Sportfishing Berth 55 is another good one.

The Southern Cal out of Pierpoint.

Natalius out of Newport Landing.

Western Pride out of Davey's Locker.

All good choices. These are all 1/2 day boats.

There's the New Del Mar out of Marina Del Ray. I think they're going after rock fish and sand bass right now

Marina del rey is good, but for a first timer I would say Redondo. The deckhands are really friendly and helpful. Since it's your first time, don't be afraid to ask the deckhand for help and tips. They'll tell you what tackle to rig up, show you how to do it if you don't know, and help you land the fish as well. Another good option that I like is the Pursuit out of 22nd st.
Most of the local boats are all going for mainly rockfish, but the Bass are starting to bite so you should have a good time.

p.s try and avoid the crowds. Fish during the week and not on weekends. a crowded boat is tough on a firstimer.

You can also check out www.976-tuna.com, tons of info on that site too and there's live audio reports from anglers, captains and landings.

Thanks for clearing that up. I went there once on a 3/4 day charter and we were on the New Del Mar so I assumed it was a 3/4 day boat.

Yes, New Del Mar is a 1/2 day. Nice crew.....
Betty O is not worth getting on....waste of money, IMO.
