View Full Version : Triggering on the Big Drum 4/27

I took Yen and Evan, who are avid surf fishermen, out aboard the Big Drum to test my new 1kw flush mount M164 thru-hull transducer, that I had installed on Saturday. It worked great, I was able to hold the bottom going 24 knots all the way out to 925ft, that's when I went over the edge of the canyon and lost the signal. Those Rockfish are in big trouble now.

The fishing was kind of slow, but I did manage to get into a WFO Triggerfish bite, and Yen and Evan had a blast.

BTW-Yen caught a 32 inch White Sea Bass from the beach on Friday and a 17 inch Barred Perch on Saturday. All on shallow/medium diving 4 inch crank baits.

"Got the call from Vince and immediately jumped at the opportunity to fish aboard the Big Drum. Picked up Poach and we were off. The first half of the day was slow with the fish on lock jaw. Vince made the decision to go after critters in the afternoon and at one spot, for about an hour, it was wfo on triggerfish.

Sometimes we had 4 or 5 free swimmers following hooked fish. I've never caught a trigger before and boy, do they pull...my drag was buttoned down on 20lb and line was still going out.

There were many double hookups.

Poach also picked up 3 sheephead.

One of the funniest moments was when Vince tried to act incognito to a passing boat while hooked up on a small rockfish. We could see triggers following and eventually an absolute toad jumped onto the second hook. His line was zinging in all directions and the fish was taking him around the boat...all the while, Vince is acting as if nothing is happening.

Wasn't long before Vince picked up his 8lb spinning rig...the red setup with the flashing lights. The first trigger went zzzzzzzzzz pop! The second one went zzzzzzzz...then into a rock...then came out...zzzzzzzz....then went back in...then came out ...zzzzzzzzz pop! Funny sheit! The video is just before the second time it went into the rocks:

New species for me, another one to tick off the list.

Twins lost at birth:

Lipping these fish is the best way to hold them.

Hit a few areas on the way back for some bass. Vince hooked up first to this sandie:

then picked up this beast of a bass:

Thanks for a great day on the water, Vince! Never a dull moment onboard. The fight of the triggers will be something I remember for a long while.

Thanks for the report and pics.
Xlnt job on the fishys :thumb:
Cool about your new transducer.
Just saw that airmar makes a through hole that the Element/Internals are pre angled for V bottom boats.
No shimming required to make it shoot straight down.

That is one I got, it's the 20 degree angle.

Nice triggers! I didn't know you y ou can actually try to fish for them intentionally.

BTW, what rod is your friend using? It looks like a Seeker Inshore, but not sure.

Nice indeed.
Will be one of my future upgrades.

Is your monitor a 1 k model or a 600W?

I got the B164 which is a 1kw unit. I got it for $650.00 which is a good deal, from Expert Marine Services...just ask for Sergio.

Here is an example of the one I got.

Very cool,
Thanks for the info.
Ducers are going fast. Only two left.

As of now, Im using a Furuno 600W 582L fishfinder. With a transom transducer.

I also have the Furuno Navnet VX2 radar.
I can run a 1k to 3k blk box sonar with that unit. Would rather not spend the money though.
Would be nice if the Blk box and the 582L. Had the same cable plug ins.

From what ive read
Upgrading the transducer from a 600W to a 1K transducer.
When your fishfinder is rated at only 600W.
Is a really big improvement.

That new ducer you bought sure is a smart design. (No Shimming)
Sits very flat to the hull.
Totally worth going with that setup.
Especially on a trl boat
