So this trip started out a little funny...
I get a call from ymin (Mike) at about 10:30am on the day we're supposed to leave for our overnight trip on the Island Tak. He tells me "Dood...the trip is canceled due to high winds...what are we gonna do??" "We're gonna have to find another boat Mike..."
Couple hours later, Mike calls again "Dood...Sam (from Best Fishing Tackle) got the Westerly to take us out on an overnight to Catalina. You wanna go?" Now...for anyone that knows me and my saltwater addiction should know, Capt. John Ackley is the man that re-educated me on the fine art of fishing. I respect the man so much that I sometimes call him "dad". So, of course, my answer was a very clear and concise YES!!!
So, later that night, we all gather at Long Beach Pierpoint Landing.
Mike, Bob, Walter, Jimmy, B, and whole bunch of people from BFT show up leisurely at...10pm.
(Side story: Mike tells me to be at the landing at 8pm, because the boat leaves at 9pm. But in reality the boat did not leave until 12pm because it wasn't scheduled to board until 11pm. Now the important question is...what the heck am I doing in a parking lot all by myself at 8pm?!?! We all have cell phones, it really shouldn't be all this disorganized...oh well...at least I'm going fishing!!)
Anyway...bottom line. It's still early in the year and fishing is really (as always) hit or miss during these times. Capt. John worked almost every inch of the island, both backside and front side!! You will not find another Capt. that is willing to burn that much fuel just to try to put you on fish. That's why I call him "dad". Fishing could have been better if conditions were better...blah blah blah...but one thing for sure....WE TRIED HARD!!
So...on to the story.
------------------------
10:30pm Finally on board the Westerly. Aside from the NBU clan and Sam, I don't know anybody else. But thankfully these guys were all cool people and very friendly!

Then there's Bob...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4190006.jpg
The charter master, Sam of Best Fishing Tackle.

Jimmy...

12:30am We finally head out. By 12:31am I'm asleep...zzzz.....
03:30am I hear the anchor drop and the engine turn off....I wake up and look around, no one was awake...so I figured I'd go back to sleep...
06:00am I look out the doorway and see Mike bent over...so I jump out, scratch my eyes in disbelief...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200013.jpg
Mike, whatcha got there?? If it's a WSB, I'm gonna cut your line!! GRRRR!!
10 minutes later...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200014.jpg
Uh...nope! Not a WSB....too bad Mike (yeah!)
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200015.jpg
Well, from here on, we tried really hard to get a WSB, but they were no where to be found.
So, we make a move.
08:30am My "No Banana" senses are going off...there is a banana on this boat. I can feel its presence...Bob!
"Yes Sir!"
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200018.jpg
We need you to counter-act the banana mojo. Are you up to the task?
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200019.jpg
Why did I even ask?!?!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200020.jpg
(FYI: the bait for today was live squid.)
Then...finally the fish show up. Two of these ugly (but very tasty) beasts come over the rail!! Yep, that's a ling cod!! B and one guy from the BFT crew landed it. (So do you still doubt Bob's anti-Banana Mojo powers?!?!)
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200021.jpg
Look at Jimmy's super-sized Blue Perch!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200022.jpg
After landing a couple of Calicos, big Blues, a couple sheepheads...we make another move.
During this move, we found out a few things.
This was B's first overnight trip. YEAH!!
This was also B's first Ling Cod!! YEAH!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200023.jpg
This is the heart of a Ling Cod...(can you guess where this is going?)
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200024.jpg
Oh yeah...here is comes...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200025.jpg
There it goes!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200026.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200027.jpg
(I'm actually crying as I type this I'm laughing so hard!!)
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200028.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200029.jpg
Guess what else we found out...Ling Cod number 2 owner...yep.
It was his first one too!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200031.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200032.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200033.jpg
This dude is actually chewing it!! LOL!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200035.jpg
And ENJOYED IT!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200036.jpg
After lunch, we're now on the front side of the island. We pick up a couple more bass, couple more whitefish....Jimmy hooks up on a bonito. BUT...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200039.jpg
Jimmy needs to learn how to wind fast and "jump" the fish...cause this doggy wasn't going to give up a free meal!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200040.jpg
Oh well...that was exciting.
Pretty much, the day ended here. We tried a few more spots by the west end...but nothing much.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200041.jpg
The winds started picking up again and the drifts were there...then gone...then back...it was weird...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200042.jpg
As you can see, I started to play around. I actually was practicing my casting up on the bow. But then thought...hey, I can cast with either hand. That's good enough.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080420/P4200043.jpg
So, now it's time to go home. I really don't know where the time went. If you noticed, I lost track of time very early on. Unfortunately, there were no biggies to brag about, no WSB or YT, just lot's of laughs and fun.
Congrats to B on his first Ling Cod (and the heart...LOL) and his first overnight trip.
You know B, as long as you are hanging out with the NBU, you know for sure this isn't going to be your last!!
