What's the biggest fish you caught in the sierras? I think this thread might help others when they make the trek up to the sierras and give them a shot at a big fish!

Not a big fish, but I know I've hooked into bigger. I had one at convict laek once near the back of the lake on a blue Rapala CD 9... it had to be in the 8lb range...but I hooked the fish a little weird so when I reeled him in he was spinning and it came loose about 4 feet from the boat.

The biggest fish I evercaught was on January 13, 2002 on the Lower Owens south of line street. It weighed 9 1/2 pounds per the scale at the motel. Caught on a nightcrawler.

That's a really nice fish for North lake! They can be hard to catch there sometimes, but there are definitely some monsters cruising in that lake. I've heard of 10lb + coming from there.

Badfish2,

I caught the fish at Gull on a Berkley gulp egg. In a 1 hr. time span, I nailed that fish, lost the bigger one and also landed a 5.5lb hookjaw cutbow. Perhaps my greatest hour of fishing up there ever. I did it all in a sustained 25 mph wind in my face with white caps crashing at my feet and with no net (because I'm stupid). I definitely would have landed the bigger fish if I had a net.

The brown at the res was caught on a black & gold J9 fished off of the dam.

The bow at Convict was caught on a nightcrawler fished 3 ft from shore. Well, not exactly fished as I was actually putting the worm on my hook when I saw this beauty swimming the shore heading my direction. Right before it got in front of me, I put the worm out in front of it in the water and game on. My easiest catch ever and it was also worth $300 to me as I was up there for a buddy's bachelor party and I won biggest fish for the day.

Like I said, great memories!

Up untill we moved here to Texas, we used to go to Diaz every Memorial Day weekend. The year that fish was caught was unusual in that the trout generally die off from the warmer temps by Memorial day. However, that year, they were letting water into Diaz from the aqueduct up to and during the weekend. That, combined with cooler temps kept the fish alive until we got there. I also got some great action on flies in the little creek that the aqueduct was flowing into. It seems there were a lot of "duct" trout that washed down the creek. All in all that was a great weekend.

Best fish on the fly:
23-25" brown (no camera and no measuring tape, rough estimate), about 8lbs.
Little Truckee River, CA
Middle of August 2006
#22 Baetis nymph on 6X tippet

Hooked into a bow earlier that day that was easily over 10, possibly 12lbs.

I've hooked and lost larger fish on the East side, and one fish that snapped brand new 3x flourocarbon tippet on the hit on the Upper O. I'm still hunting him to this day

I think this might have been my PB brown out of the lower Owens just outside bishop. Small for you sierra guys but big for me after fishing the creeks around here. Fought like crazy too from growing in the quick river!
Also lost what would have been my PB rainbow trout on a rapala, estimated to be about 3lbs or so in the river. The thing was thrashing all over and eventually got away!

3-4 lb alpers out of South Fork Bishop creek in 02'-real salmon egg...brought back from a trip in ALASKA the same summer. This fish has a story. I was walking the creek after just arriving to the campsite. I waded into this little pool to get arround some of those damn willows and this big ol' fish scared me when he swam between my legs. I ended up falling on my bum getting on wet and walked back to camp. I went back and told my pops that fish had a vendetta...caught him later that evening just before sundown at the same spot. Then I ate his *ss the next night.

2+ lbs brown out of South Fork Bishop Creek at one of the Culverts-nightcrawler

4+ lbs planted bow out of the far inlet at Sabrina in 07'-Thomas Bouyant-we had to walk back with a full stringer for three fisherman with x4 large fish...was not a pleasant hike back.
