On Saturday night, my brother, and I made a last minute decision to hop on the BG 90. We got to the landing 30 minutes before the boat departed. Surprising to see, it was only 17 anglers, including us on board.
Got on the boat, saw 3 full tanks of squid, which was niceeeeeeeee. Capt. Mike, made the decision to go to Catalina in hunt for WSB. I was hoping for SCI but CI wouldn’t be bad if the water wasn’t too crowded.
Morning time comes, 4am, I rolled off my bunk and stumbled on deck. I saw a guy hooked up, the tip action on his rod looked like a fish, but 5 mins later, I think a sea lion robbed it and it started peeling line and then, popped, line snapped.
5:45am - We made a move to a spot in the East End. We anchored up along with ONLY 40 other PB’ers…..Catalina at its best! We saw Independence out in the back side also. Yes, Independence. They were running a special trip because they just had their boat serviced at San Pedro.
7:45am - My brother hooks up to a WSB. Everyone was cheering him on and anxious for themselves to get bit.
7:47am - 6 others hooked up to WSB. Whoever had a squid on the port side got bit. Sadly, only 3 out of 6 that hooked up was landed.
7:53am - My brother lands the BIG WSB, which ended up being JP for the day. I was in awe when I saw that thing come over the rail. The fish scaled out exactly at 45 lbs. It was his first WSB, and I was super stoked for him. It was a trophy fish nothing less.
The rest of the trip was slow. Even rockfishing was slow. We tried for seabass again in the afternoon hours for nothing else than wide open perch and sargos.
