Friday: Tried to hit up Crowley, got a late start since we got into mammoth at 1am thurs night. The boat wasn't running good, so we got out there, and the wind came right up, it was bad! So we left there and headed up to Mammoth Lakes to find that most were frozen. Twins were ice free, but Mary, George, and Mamie were iced over except for a few spots. Decided to fish a little opening at George. We caught maybe about 5 fish between me and my dad, mostly using a black wooly bugger. Went back to Mary that night and caught this trout on a black wooly as well right at the outlet.

Saturday: Woke my butt up at 530am and off to Crowley again. This time we used a different boat that we brought, and got out into McGee. Tried about 15 ft of water. I lost two fish in the air, and my dad was able to land one in the net. We had several strikes that we missed fish. Just my luck, as my dad was bringing his line in to check his flies, he passed right next to my indicator, and i was pissed because I assumed he would get hooked on my line. Sure enough, as his indicator went by, mine started to go down, so i was like great, this will be a fun tangle. I pulled up, and sure enough, no tangle, but a FISH! Because i thought it was going to be a tangle, I wasn't that prepared for a fish, and ended up farmin it. The bite seemed to be around 9-10am. We left by about 12pm. We should have done better, but whatever. We were still water nymphing w/ some crystal tiger midges and ghillies (sp?).

That afternoon I went up to Rock Creek Lake, which my dad thought would be frozen, but I wanted to check out anyways. I'm glad we did. So what do you know, I see this kid w/ a huuuuge fro, and I'm like I know that guy. Sure enough, I go talk to him, and it is bishop trouter. I recognized him from his opening day post. He did pretty good at the lake, caught around 6 with a 2lb on lip ripperz. Obviously a little bit better of a fisherman than me. Hopefully he posts his report soon. Anyways, I launched my little boat, and fished right near the little inlet at the launch ramp. After a couple hours stripping a black wooly bugger, I had caught 5 fish, some were probably lucky catches. The bait guys seemed to be getting quite a few fish. My hands got freezing when the sun went down and they had water from releasing fish and pulling up the anchor!

Sunday: Hit Convict up in the morning. Hit a nice rainbow trollin a black wooly bugger right away, and went around the lake on the right shore. Went all the way to the back inlet, wow, is that a steep drop off back there! Goes from 1ft to like 100 ft in 20 ft horizontal distance. Anyways, fishing seemed slow, eventually got 2 more near the outlet after a few more hours. Right near the outlet in about 10ft of water I could see schools of trout of about 20 fish!!! They weren't too interested in anything, but then again, I probably suck at fishing, and something may have enticed them. Anyways, that was about it.

ALL FISH were CPR!

The weekend was frustrating w/ lots of line tangles, boat problems, etc but it was all worth it when you caught a fish and saw the beauty of the Eastern Sierra's. I cant wait to go back. Hope you enjoyed the report that was like a novel. Geez!

No problem, glad to give a report... Naw... We were thinking about it, but didn't want to hassle with the keeping and cleaning of the fish. You could say we are lazy. But I am also becoming one of those dang C&R release guys and wanting more fish in the water to be caught again instead of in my stomach. I probably should keep one and eat one since I haven't in such a long while, and I'll probably enjoy it and do it more often. Just gotta break my habit :D

It's funny how things change and progress. I'm the same way. I keep a few every now and then but for the most part it's C&R for me too. I enjoy catching them so much that why not give someone else a chance to have the same experience

Great post - thanks. I'm going up to Rock Creek Lake next week, first time in MANY years. I'll try a bit of everything I can from shore without waders. Planning on starting off with some bait - catch some dinner - next day move to flies and small lures, maybe hike up to one of the lakes up the meadow that have just lost their ice...

ICE! Jeez - I've been in Santa Barbara too long...

that looked unbelievably beautifull, man. sorry to hear about the getting stuck and tangled lines, but that place looks so heavenly, it's everything fishing down here is not, i mean it's good and all but does not look THAT GOOD.

I want to go up there soon, on the 14th thru 19th at Convic and June Lake Areas.

Well nice report. I read this report and then I realized I was up there fishing the same weekend. I did the dig at Manzanar during the week and drove up to Convict and fished there Sat. the day before u guys were there. I caught one rainbow trout in 5 hrs. Everyone did seem to be fishing in that back area where it drops off but the fishing was really slow! I drove by Crowley that Sat but then I headed up to Virginia Lakes. The lower lake seems to be kept well stocked...lol. Anyways, still looks like you had fun fishing! It is definitely beautiful fishing in the Sierras, and I abolsutely love it!
