Bolsa Chica w/ Bill Varney & TEAM 57

Last month at the Fred Hall show, Wingnut & I talked with light line surf fishing guru Bill Varney about giving FNN members the opportunity to GO FISHING with and learn a few tips about surf fishing straight from the master himself, Bill Varney!

A few phone calls and e-mails later, Wingnut and I met up with a few other members for a full day of information and fishing with Bill Varney at Bolsa Chica State Beach!

Bill is such a great guy, very personable and always receptive to our questions and thoughts!

We all gathered in the beach parking lot for Bill's seminar and some great "insider" tips!

I hope I remember everyone, but it was great seeing Wingnut, Blackwater, XTranzMan, OlFisherGal, CityDad, Newbefisher, TackleJunkie, BoxLobster, Howstar, CoffeeRobusta, and a few other FNN members who just happened to be on the beach as well.

I was feeling under the weather all day and didnt really fish all that much but there was no way I was gonna miss this great opportunity and Im VERY glad I attended!... Bill teaches me new things every time I speak with him.

It was a tough day of fishing out there..... if theres one thing I've learned about Bolsa. It's hit or miss...

There were quite a few "slab" Perch caught and when everyone made the switch to the southern jetty, I heard the bite took off...... at that point, I was sitting on the beach coughing my brains out and feeling miserable..... but Im glad the location switch got some people on some fish!

This gathering was basically a "trial run" for Bill..... and he's thinking about possibly doing it again in the future..... if you think you'd be interested in fishing with Bill and getting some great information and tips. please e-mail me your name and e-mail address and Bill or I will contact you the next time we head out with FNN members!

I had to laugh at this last photo!..... here I am fishing in full waders and strapped with all kinds of gear........ and one of the coolest cats I know, "Howstar".... is standing there next to me looking like he just walked out of his hotel room in Cancun!... LOL! I gotta learn to relax.

"Howstar's" method must work.... cause' he caught a very nice Perch later on!

One of our members mentioned that they ran into a fellow FNN member working the jetty ... I assume that was you?.. as for "awesome"... I dont think thats the word I used! LOL! :lol:

BUT... the bite at the jetty was closer to "awesome" from what I heard!

I had a blast for my 1st time fishing the surf, Thanks to Dana and Bill who showed me the ropes. Thanks again, hope to do it again soon!

Gotta tell yah, I had a blast and a wet ***!!!! It was a very fun day for me. Thanks Bill and especially his bud Ken for all the tips. The surf was very rough, but I farmed alot but did manage to bring in (3) perch. Sorry you were under the weather Dana.....chit happens, I forgot my shirt again!!! Of course, Wingnut and boxlobster were fun to fish with as well as all the others present. I owe wingnut one for trying to give me a boost up the sand. Of course I landed flat on my back. Glad no one had a camera of that.!!! You are a fun guy!!! :rofl::rofl:We gotta get out there together some time when I get some of those LC's, and fish up North so I don't have to spend $70 bucks to fill my truck:cry::twisted: The surf was rough and I got knocked down a few times. I think that its gotta be the hat. Some people say that certain shoes make you run faster and jump higher. My hat just makes me fish better. I would be lost without that darn thing. I guess you can say it's just my good luck charm.

It was a great event Dana, special thanks goes out to Bill Varney for giving us the opportunity to learn from one of the original "surf fishing minds."

I knew that you weren't feeling too well Dana, seeing you laying there on the beach. :neutral: I was going to come over & keep you company but I hit three fat BSPs in a row and when I scaled the jetty rocks, the bite just went off. There was a local guy fishing right next to me that was using ghost shrimp and we were taking turns pulling up one fat prego Perches after another. I didn't really want to switch to bait because I was still was hoping to nab a Hali with the LC. Did get one nice strike that could have been a Butt or a YFC.

OFG you're a riot, I would've ran like hell if you started screaming rape! At least I got to touch your butt.:rofl: Great fishing side by side with ya, we did have one double hook up. ;)

T.J. You're right, if there was Flat Boy in that surf, I would've found him. I worked every foot of that mile long beach. The highlight of my day... a PB Sandpiper. :lol:

Really great to finally meet & fish with some of the members, good times. Can't wait for the next one! :mrgreen:

I bought a bike on Saturday because of the gas prices, so my heart wasn't fully there on Sunday. :neutral: I kept thinking about what I needed to get for it. Still a fun day and I got some ideas and tips I got to try out soon. :thumb:

Dana.. that was a great outing.. learned alot from Bill and Ken as well as the other members out there... and fishing with OFG and BoxlObster was blast...
thanks TJ and CR for your help on the rocks... it seemed as though every time we threw a perch back in another member pulled it right back out! Just then you can hear Casey say "double hook-up." That was a lot of fun... see you all again!

Thanks dana for putting this event together and letting me in on the fun! even though i only managed a dink bsp i still had a blast and it was great fishing with some new members and bill varney! Im still kicking myself for not going to the other side of the jetty.

Ernie... was wondering where you went! I thought mr skunk was going to follow me to the jetty but luckily that wasn't the case... there were some fatty pregnant bsp we were pulling up... we'll see you again...
