Nice Day at Bolsa Chica

Some days it's no fun fishing. It's just frustrating, slow, and there's just other things you oughta be doing. Good thing today wasn't one of those days.

Fisherman57 was kind enough to invite me to a mini surf fishing seminar on the beach with Bill Varney (http://fishthesurf.homestead.com/FISHTHESURFP1.html) and about 20 other FNN members. It was really great to meet you all and to get a chance to fish with the master.

So after getting a few pointers and getting some bait, we hit the shore like an army. No bites until I switched from sand crabs to lug worms. Then caught three BSB in a short period of time.

All in all it's what fishing is all about. Nice weather, nice people, some lessons learned, and a few fish to boot.

Nice meeting you out there man, hope you learned something today. I learned that there are no Halibut in Bolsa Chica, shoulda hit up the reserve. ;) And that a Sandpiper fights just as hard as a large Perch. :mrgreen:

thanks for the report! it was great to put some faces to the names i see so often on the board. i had a blast fishing with everyone. when we moved i was wondering where you and the rest of the gang went! i should have went ot the other side of the jetty. the right jetty was pretty slow. I managed one dink bsp. im kicking myself for not following you guys. haha oh well another day.

Those buttermouth were nuts! I've never seen one there and Bill was saying he hadn't caught one of those in like 20 years! Congrats guys, I think those were a fairly rare catch. They had some good size to them too!

I had something hit one of my sandcrabs like a freight train with no remorse, but when I set the hook all I brought up was an empty hook! I'm thinking it was either one of those buttermouth, a YFC or a 'Bean.

I'll get some pics up here a bit later.

I wish I had spent a little more time with everyone, but was feeling under the weather and just kinda worked the beach slow...

I heard the bite at the jetty was tremendous and Im glad you guys got on some good fish!

Actually, from fishing that spot a few times and knowing the shape of that particular rock I'm standing on.. I was well out of harms' reach. The picture portrays me a bit closer to the water than I was.

It was when I ran down to grab Coffea's fish that I got a lil close! :lol:
Seriously though, them jetty's are dangerous. Thanks for the reminder ;)
Falling in right there with all that current in waders could turn in to a rough situation rather quickly.

Well if you can't pull 'em outta the water I guess there aren't any at Bolsa Chica. Sounds like a challenge to all the OC hali fishermen. It was nice to finally meet you Wingnut.

Looks like you did good at HH though. I've been debating lately.....kayak or float tube. Float tube offers at least some of the benefits of a kayak (access on the water) but without some of the hassels (where to store, how to move, get a rack for the car, etc.). They're also cheaper and would fulfill my need for instant gratification. Those bass you caught have me thinking about it.
