I had the day off yesterday with plans of fishing in the works for about a month, nothing really special I just wanted to get out to my favorite pond to fish from shore- the pacific ocean. Like most humans theres just something about the beach and seeing the never ending ocean that just calms me and puts a smile on my face:D.
I had asked for some advice on areas to surf fish in Orange County on this forum about a week ago and after some "motivating picture posting" I got the answer I needed:lol: . A big thanks to everyone who shared some info with me, I chose Bolsa Chica(Ithink:lol:) and started my fishing day at around 9:30 I donned my high dollar waders(my rain pants from the SARL event, and some old school Vans) and stepped into the blue. I felt like Dark Shadow at a straight bar- I had no clue what I was doing:lol:. I had fun though nothing was caught on my arsenal of krocs or rapalas, nor from my bait setup so I called it quits after about an hour or so..... a beautiful morning nonetheless

From here I tried to find somewhere within Huntington Harbor to fish but that was a no go, heading north on PCH I ran into Big Game Fish & Tackle and picked up some ghost shrimp as well as some advice and a few Happy Birthdays.... That place is cool.
So now what? Well the parking lot attendant at Bolsa had told me that people catch fish at the New Jetty so I headed down there for maybe 20 minutes, the currents were too much I had to throw 5ounces of lead just to keep my bait in one spot, and my krocs were getting banged up by the rocks on the way back up so I said nuts to this and took off. No pics.
11:30 and still no Bday fish. Where is the one salt water spot that I know of where I am very likely to catch something? NPH. To the Island I went. I arrived to find good parking and an empty dock, and a dreadfully low tide:(.

Oh well I thought, I should catch at least a smelt if nothing else. 1:30 rolls by with only one bite on my bait pole. No love on the krocs, gulp, or grubs and just when I had come to the conclusion that it was going to be one of those "well at least I enjoyed the outdoors" days I get hit, its a lil YFC

Just as I release the lil guy I look to my right and my other pole is dancin, it did not get slammed but as soon as I set the hook zzZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it was off. Finally I had some action and on my 6lb setup too this was going to be fun. This unknown fishy had some major speed, I had to turn him real quick before he reached the dock to the left of me so he would not wrap around a post or a buoy rope. I got him to come back to me and as I did I saw the most beautiful purple and blue fish flash at me and then go back down and take off toward the harbor, I was not sure what it was the first time then I got it to turn and come back at me and when it surfaced again it was a nice 2 footer white sea bass.... My first! well unfortunately I was solo fishing and had no net, when I got him to the dock I knew my 6lb flouro would not be a sure thing to lift him out of the water and while Im trying to figure out what to do he turns and snaps my line and goes off to hopefully grow into a beast. No pic:cry:
2 fish within 10 minutes plus a new species really jump started my afternoon and gave me the energy to stay a few more hours. My next fish was a nice little Spotty

Finally I ended my day with a small sting ray.
