Fishing the breakwater in Alamitos Bay today and caught this thing. Wtf is it?

How funny.
I was going to behave myself by not calling it some sort of needle nose pliers fish.
Could have put him to use last week when I dropped my throttle linkage stud between my starter and engine block last week

It looks like a streched out smelt, but it probably a needlefish.

That's a needlefish - down by the East Cape they get over 3 feet long. Up here the size you have in the picture is about as big as they get.

It's a needle fish, but you should NEVER NEVER EVER handle them with bare hands cause they have poisonous slim on their scales and your hands will start to blister and fall off... about the time you read this reply. And if you believe this, then I have some nice swamp land in Florida I could sell ya for a good price. Sweet looking fish though.
