THE REDDER THE BETTER
Late report from Sat 3/22,
Headed out of MDR, picked up $10 worth of sardines.
Punched in a few numbers into the GPS to "check out" on the way to the promise land.
Very little wind or swell and I had a good feeling that we were going to have a good day.
Checked out the spots on the way but they didn't looks very fishy on the meter. Tried one drop on one of the spots for nada.

Headed to the promise land from there which looked more fishier on the meter. Couple drifts on the first spot yielded a couple of Bocaccio and a large sandbass. Not quite what we were after. Made a move to the next spot and hooked up on the targeted species...REDS.
Double hook rigs with a 1/2 of squid or live sardines produced. 4 oz. Megabait jigs were also producing.
Allan got the chance to try his "Lucanus" copy cat lures and scored the biggest red of the day on it. By around that time we were limited out and shifted gears to search for the elusive halibut of the SMB.

17 reds, 3 chucklehead

Didn't catch any halibut, but did manage to C & R around a dozen bass on some structure spots on the way home.

Sweet report! Nice take on the reds!

Awesome job on the Lucanus copy. Might have to copy that idea. :) Twenty bones for a rockfishing lure is a bit steep when you could still catch 'em on a strip of squid just the same. However, seeing a toolbench knockoff that works is sweet!!!! :thumb:

Ladies and gents,
Thanks for the replies!
I wish I could say it was always like that, but it isn't. Right place, right time.

Torpedo Lucanus- If you want to make your own, Allan used a silicone spinnerbait skirt that he zip-tied in the middle of the strands to the eye of a 4 or 5 oz. torpedo. He did mention that a torpedo with a larger eye would make it easier to assemble. He then added the assist hook to the lower eye.
You also can buy replacement skirts for them, $20 for a pack of 10.

Here's a video that shows how they use the real thing.
Take note on how they work this jig- Slow and steady retrieve, not lifting and dropping:
