Oh yeah! Hit up Seal Beach on Saturday night. Got there right at 10:30 and the grunion were running full swing. Our first view of them was easily 300 doing their thing on the sand.

Snagged a few to toss out as live bait, hoping to hit a Halibut. The first one I hooked on got its revenge as it released milt on down my arm. Dang it! Wasn't sure if I was getting hits or not with the little silver fishy yanking and pulling. I think I need to use the smaller grunion next time. Moved down the beach a little and cast out again. By this time my first grunion wasn't live bait anymore but I got hit almost immediately after casting out. Nice fight but I could tell it wans't a monster Halibut. It was a decent sized YFC! Let him go to fight anther day.

Kept fishing between there and my orginal location, while the GF stayed in the thick of the grunion snapping photos. Manged two other fish a thornback and a round stingray. Man I never know if it's a plastic bag or a fish when I catch one of those rays.

The grunion kept running until 1:00 AM and were still doing their thig when we left. All in all a nice night.

Nice report! I've gone to see the run several times but the grunions were no shows. Maybe I'll give it a shot again this year.

Do any of you know if those grunion could survive if you grabbed a couple and stuck 'em in a bucket with an aerator?
BTW did you catch that YFC on a grunion?

Thanks for the post and the pics. I never witnessed the grunion run and now I know what they're talking about.

As long as you didn't snag em with a hook you're ok.

Thanks for the pics.

Yeah....the next two months are off limits for grunion. Doesn't mean we can't fish where they are though. ;)

Calico killer kev....
Grunion are in the same family as topsmelt, but they don't get as big, so i am sure you can keep them alive with an aerator. And yes that YFC sucked up a 5 in grunion. It wasn't real lively at that point though.

I once tried to keep them for a later fishing trip and they did not survive overnight with an air pump. I probably needed a filter to keep those nitrate levels down.

Didn't know you could use them as bait. I'll have to try that this summer after the two month wait. Thanks!
