Yesterday, a guy pulled up a 40" butt on light tackle with the help of his hoop. He used a live smelt about 8" on a Carolina rig set up....

He then not only cleaned it but also SCALED IT! :smash:

As for myself.... :skunk: :skunk: :skunk: lately

Next one's mine!!, I hope

I guess some people do fish with the purpose of eating it .

Bleed and gut is understandable but scaling it? why bother?

I think that after you scale a fish, alot of the fish oil and juice will drain out of it if you dont cook it within a reasonable time. He stayed for a few more hours after catching it.

I guess I should of added that little detail in my post.

Plus with a 40" halibut its all about filets. Why bother scaling it?

Not everyone fillet their catch. Some people like to cook with the skin intact, that's why they scale the fish.

That harbor is so polluted. I bet he got his recommended dose of heavy metals for a decade just from eating one fillet. But congrats to him for catching something that big.

Thanks for letting me know why people scale fish,I thought they did it so it would look prettier on the plate. What I was saying was why scale a fish that has been laying on the sea floor its whole life when a 40" halibut would yield a lot of nice filets.

I suppose all those contestants in the Plastic Navy or Bay Tubers derby's that landed hali's and ate them, what.... got sick? .... pee'd neon green?.

There's been a few on this board that have landed some butts in the harbor near Cabrillo pier. Did you guys eat them? Grown any extra limbs since then?

Anyway, I just thought it was cool to finally see a butt that nice.... from that pier.

Their small scales are actually a part of their skin, instead of lying on top of it and are called derma-denticles.

That butt looked like shredded meat laying there on the pier. He put in alot of effort trying
trying to remove them.

Grilled Halibut is the BEST! Probably safer to order from a restaurant though.
