I caught a surf perch in Ventura a while ago and when I brought it in I noticed something coming out of his butt. I started pulling it out and it turned out to be a lot bigger than I thought. It was probably 2 1/2" long and 1" wide. At first I thought maybe it was a sand crab, but on closer inspection I had no idea what it was. I should have taken a picture, but I found a picture online that looks kinda like it. (I searched for a picture of a type of pill bug, since that's the closest thing I could relate it to.)

It looked really similar to the one on the left. It was dark brown and hard. Any idea what it was?

Not sure what they're called, but they are all over the rocks at Topanga Beach.

Ar-1150 SEA ROACH, Ligia exotica, a large, scavenging isopod that scurries over wharf pilings. Browses on seaweed cast up on the beach. Can reduce its high body temperature by evaporating water off body surface. Has been used in neurological research on activity of neurogenic hearts. Size: 2 - 4 cm.

Is a sea roach the same as sea lice? I've found those thingies on fish before. They can wreak havoc on salmon farms.

Did you put it back where you found it, that would have been the right thing to do. C&R remember?

Me and my dad find a couple of those attached to perch whenever we fish this particular rock jetty. If you guys come across any of these you should pull them off and kill them.

Might be in the "Argulus" or fish lice family. They look alot like pill bugs or the Lydgia you see crawling on the jetties. Usually, when I've seen them, they have crawled out of t he fish's gills

Ok cool thanks for clearing that up. That's pretty nasty that it's a parasite. I thought the perch ate it, but I guess it's the other way around? :)

You pull stuff out of fishes butts? Are you by any chance a proctologist? If it was going in instead of coming out I believe it was a west hollywoodaviscus butterectus. Yikes! Did you put it on a # 10 mosquito hook and give it a try? You never know.

Dude... Oh, dude, dude, dude, duuude.

I don't usually go around violating fish, but this thing looked like some prehistoric crustacean. Someone mentioned I should have used it as bait. That would've been a good idea...

I pull those off of fish every once in a while. It's not just BSP, but others too.
Last time I pulled those off of sculpin.
Using them for bait? More like reverse bait...cast them out without a hook.
And if you feel them bite and hold on to a fish, reel 'em in!
