I drove through on 395 yesterday from Reno--0* F in Bridgeport at sunup, 3-4 feet of snow on the ground throughout the valley. 5'-8' of snow on the ground all the way down 395 to Mammoth, and Crowley was fully frozen shut and snow-covered. No time to fish, we messed around in the Siskiyous and Cascades for too long and had to get home so wife could get to work today. In short--LOTS of snow, which bodes well for the eastern Sierra trout populations and the water resource.

These are from about a month ago and it probably looks about the same right now. We had another 3ft of snow but it's been warm so the snow is likely compacted to about the same level it was then.

thanks guys. I doubt everything will thaw out by mid-April unless it gets unseasonably warm up in the Canyons. Convict and Crowley are usually fishable on opening day. If the roads are open, ice fishing on Sabrina and South may be doable. Smitty will be the best person to contact about that. The Owens valley is pleasant right now, temps in the 70s. Just head east on any road off the 395 and explore.....

Well, you never know. If the warm weather persists until then with no more snow, you may get lucky. You may want to check the posts on www.rockcreeklake.com as well....

30 days till the general opener! I thinks convict will thaw in time. Crowley will be thawed for sure. I guess they moved Crowley's opener back a week once but it looks like the ice is thinning. Thanks for the great pictures!

Saw this article in the LA Times this week. There are some concerns that the lake may not thaw in time....

Thanks To Every-one Who Posted The Pictures I Asked For.
I Have Never Seen Pics Of Crowley Frozen Or The Other Lakes For That Matter.
Been Using This Website For 4 Years Now And Am Still Amazed At The Resources It Provides.

Crowley iced out this weekend. My buddy came down from Mammoth yesterday afternoon and after some heavy wind on Friday, the lake is mostly clear of ice. Just an FYI for you guys and gals.

There is still plenty of time between now and the opener and conditions can change very quickly...we've had great weather the last two years, maybe we have third on the way.

What Smitty said.

I went past Crowley northbound on Thursday (4/3), and it was about half-covered with thin rotten ice. On the return trip Monday afternoon, the lake appeared to be entirely clear of ice.

I hear that upper Bishop creek canyon is still frozen solid. Intake 2 is open and crowley looks good too. I'm hoping all of June Lake Loop is good to go because that's where I'm headed

From today's LA Times:

Main lakes: Crowley, Convict, Gull, June, Silver and Grant are ice free.

Ice remains thick, however, at Sabrina, South and North lakes above Bishop, and at Virginia Lakes near Bridgeport. Roads to these lakes will be open, barring more wintry weather.

Ice-fishing tip: Trout may be patrolling just beneath the ice or along the bottom. Find their depth and stay there. Phoebe's, Kastmasters, mini-jigs and night crawlers ought to produce.
