Yep, that's a Jacksmelt.

If you are Japanese and you know what SANMA is then it is comparable.
If you are not Japanese and you don't know what SANMA is, then it is bait!

The meat on this fish is very dry when cooked, no fatty oils.
The flavor is a little fishy and there are many small bones.

Obviously I've tried....

That's a smelt alright. I call them bay rats because they're a nuisance to me when I'm trying to fish for something else.

 Funjunkie <--ahaha, Japanese fisherman. Will fish to eat, will eat fish.
Although I'm not eating any fish I catch in Cabrillo or LB. But south of Newport is fair game. I'll try any fish once and learn. If it's good, then it's on the dinner menu. If it sucked, then it's off the list!

I always wonder: Who was the first to eat _____?
For example, jellyfish, puffer fish, sea cucumber or an urchin.

I don't go fishing to C&R because that's cruel. You're essentially teasing the fish between life or death. Just don't fish like that to start with. Granted the babies need to grow so I'll release those of course!
