My Gf And Me went out to the Santa Monica Pier Last night around 11pm. We were fishing with cut squid strips. On my first cast I caught this fish

Those fish you caught are either smelt or jacksmelt which can get pretty good size in the winter time. Also, If you're really jonesin' for some fish, these little guys are quite tasty. congrats on avoiding the skunk.

Jacksmelt are great tasting, firm white meat. Try it with Ponzu sauce, citrus/soysauce mix, put this on all your fish dishes... :thumb:

Jacksmelts are not croakers.

They are members of the silversides family.

That's either a jacksmelt or a topsmelt. They are both fish in the silversides family. Grunion are in the same family too but they don't get as big. In topsmelt the back edge of the first dorsal fin is just above the anal fin. In jacksmelt the back edge of the first dorsal is in front of the dorsal fin. I think topsmelt tend to have a few pale yellow dots on them too.
