You might want to tell us how much you're looking on spending, what you're looking to fish for, and how long?
Then I'd love to help you.

In May, Your best bet would be Launching out of San Diego. Going into Mexican waters for yellowtail. San Clemente Island if the year starts off very early.
May is a good time for WSB hunting also. Catalina and the Channel Islands is where boats will be targeting them.
Online search of marinas in San Diego,For the Yellows, Oxnard,Ventura,Santa Barbara for the WSB.
Marinas at Dana Point, Long beach, Redondo Beach should have boats going to Catalina, San Clemente islands.
Just some good areas/imfo to start doing your homework.
A few years ago, I was looking into saltwater fishing clubs.
They were going on boats to Catalina etc, For like 200.00 ea person.
Doing the club thing. Paying the extra $$. I believe you have like 20or30 people on board, instead of like 70.

Here's a few boat's that you might want to look into, I've been on them before and they have a great crew. Fishing gear you would have to rent from the landing.

Ultra - Newport Landing, can take a max of 8 on overnight trips. http://www.fishnewportlanding.com/ultra.html
Rocky Point - Redondo Sportfishing, can take a max of 9 or 10 on overnight trips. http://www.redondosportfishing.com/Charters.htm
Outrider - 22nd St. Landing, can take max of 9 on overnight trips. http://www.22ndstreet.com/pages/outrider.php

These are small 40 or 50 ft boats and will get you to the fishing grounds fast. If doing a 3/4 day trip they are available too but you can take more people. Hope this helps.

I used these people last July out of Ensenada.

Here's my post from our trip:

Boat had a bathroom and sleeping area so you could rest. Gear was okay. I used them a month earlier for a smaller party and the gear was better, so I guess it's kind of a toss up. I think I worked it out to about $110 a person for boat, tip, food, gas, and toll. Looking to do it again this year, but with a stay over in Ensenada. It's a long day to leave San Diego at 4am, fish a 3/4 day and then come back home.

I've been on this boat before and the staff is great. For the rod/reel rentals the landing has some.
