I dunno if this will help anyone or not..

We were fishing off of the end of Seal Beach pier for like 30 mins the other day.
VG brought in his chovie and squid line and reeled in a huge red crab. It let go when it came out of the water though.
We tried to get one again! Sure enough, they were drawn to the bait like magnets, but we couldn't land one to check it out or get pictures because they would let go when we pulled them out of the water. We got 5 of them on the line within a half hour or so. I dunno if people eat those crabs or what, but I'd imagine you'd have a net full of crabs if you were to drop the hoop net off the pier full of chopped chovies and squid.

Hope this info comes in handy to someone. That was our first taste of ocean crabbin'

TJ, you guys went fishing and all you caught were crabs?

Way to distract us from your getting skunked. :P

O_L,
This was the other day when I caught the yellow fin croaker and VG caught that giant 'bean
We made a pit stop between the surf fishing to chuck some bait off the pier.

I wouldn't even bring it up, but these crabs seemed pretty significant. I'd guess 2lbs or more? I'm not sure but they were pretty hefty!
No macks or smelt. There was even a guy there jiggin' a sabiki rig for nada.

I am so relieved to know that you caught something that day.

For a minute there I was worried. Crabs are good eating.

The way we crabbed back east was pull em to the surface on the line and the other guy has a round net at the end of a long pole handle( maybe 7-8 feet). Just stick the net under em before they let go. It works! Baskets full! Also good for Crawdads! Good luck and send em all to me! Yummm!!! Piranha :) :?

Just to let you be forewarned- Unless the laws have change in the last 40 days, it is illegal to use hook and line to take crustaceans. Those taken must be immediatley returned to the water. Sounds like there is alot of crabs at SB pier. Newport pier at times has alot, although I haven't been there lately. M dying to try out my new hoop!
