Hi Bluefinsearcher,
Here's the pages from the dfg site on a couple of Perch species. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mspcont7.asp#opaleye
The names are a bit confusing Halfmoons are called Catalina Blue Perch, Opaleye are called various things .... Blacksmith Perch !! Rubberlip Perch are not uncommon ... depending on the season. I have also seen a couple of Buttermouth Perch caught within the last month on the moo-moo I ride. About a month ago, we caught a bunch of Shiner Perch .. and I figured they were more of a bait fish than anything out .. at Horseshoe Kelp !!
There's a few fish .... like the Tree-fish that still confuse people as they resemble a perch but are actually a Rockfish !!
Others many have other additions or corrections !!

Although a pain in the *** to clean, Catalina Blue Perch(Halfmoon) are tasty as tempura with some daikon oroshi and ponzu or tempura tsuyu.
