View Full Version : How to properly kill a fish?

Sometimes when I catch a keeper and I want to kill it right away instead of letting it flop around suffocating, I want to take my fillet knife and give it a quick passage to the afterlife. Where is the best place to penetrate? I tried right behind the eyes on a barred surf perch and it didn't seem to do it. The next one I moved back from the eyes about 1/2" and it still didn't do it. I really don't like using trial and error to figure out my answer to this  Does anyone have any advice?

get the back blade of your knife and give it a good crack on top of the fish's head, it always seem to do the treat for me. :beat:

WHY WORRY ABOUT HOW TO KILL IT . TAKE A PICTURE ,AND LET IT LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY. OR USE A SMALL BAT THEY SELL FOR KILLING FISH ,AND GIVE IT A GOOD WACK ON THE HEAD . THAT WILL DO THE JOB WITHOUT BLEEDING ALL OVER THE PLACE..GOOD LUCK ,AND PEACE OUT. MIKE THE PMB.....

The way my friend's dad taught was to pinch the fish under their "chin", dislocate the chin from the body, grab the head and snap the neck.

I've never caught any fish with a neck or a chin!

What kind of fish are we talking about here?

Saltwater species?
Gaff it, whack it on the head, cut through the gill plates under the... umm... chin  throw it somewhere and let it bleed.

Freshwater... what's the point? Gut it and throw it in the cooler.

Kali,

Why you gotta pick a brown trout to pull his chin?

Break its neck, does the trick or me. Either that or just stab/cut between the fish's eyes, thats where its brains are.

What you can do is two things. First hit their head with a blunt object, sometimes that could be the backside of the knife, or a rock near by, or a small branch off a tree. Second, cut the gills where everyone else is saying, so that the fish is bled, and when you go to eat it, it will taste a lot better!

Seriously though, stun it with a blow to the head to prevent it from injuring someone or damaging it's flesh. Then snip the gills with a scissor or side cutter, as well as cutting it across the tail, severing the artery, which will allow the still beating heart to pump as much blood as possible from the fishes body. I don't always go to these lengths to assure the freshest fish possible. Sometimes I just don't have the time, or facilities, to do so. And it can be against the rules too. I usually place the guts in a plastic bag and dispose of them in a trash can when I get back to the dock.

Usually I just gut and gill them, which prevents any more blood, or lactic acid, from circulating through the fish. Then I place it on ice immediately whenever possible. I prefer to keep them from sitting in water after gutting & gilling.

Eat them fresh, do not freeze them if you can avoid it.

Did you ever find the squid head in your utility pocket? I was hoping you'd do a load of laundry with it in there! I wonder who did that to you? :secret:

I wanna see you bite the head off of a catfish. Now that would be impressive!

Hahaha... You know what, I found everything while we were on the boat that day except for the squid in my pocket. I found that later that night when I was washing my fishing clothes. I had a good laugh. Thanks. I owe you one.

you should actually cut the gills of a fish like slice it right off it will instantly kill it, but beware there will be alot of blood!!!

You guys make it way too complicated. Just pinch the fish's nostrils until it stops breathing, or put a plastic bag over its head until it gags. Sheesh, you guys are a bunch of amatuers.

To bleed any fish they need to be alive. When they die, the blood begins to coagulate along the spine and in areas of dark meat. When this happens it can bitter the meat or make it smell really fishy.
Washing it out with water is bad for the meat too, so dont try to do that if you have unbled meat. The water will wash away a lot of the oils that the good flavor and taste come from. Not to mention the nutrients and omega3 fatty acids that fish are famously known for. From personal experience, fish that is washed out with water also comes out drier.

Solution?
Well if you are going to bleed the fish it should be done while is alive, or ASAP. Alot of people try to stab or lacerate the fish under the "chin" of the fish in the triangle spot between where the gills begin and the pectoral and pelvic fins. This is where the heart of the fish is and where most of the blood goes through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/n1ckxlam/bleedspot.jpg

Also, you can slide a knife under the gill plate and seperate the gills from the "chest" of the fish.
My favorite way is to just grab one of the gills and to rip it completely out.
I have heard of people that when they have the time will hold the fish up right diagonally in a 45 degree angle, tail up head down, so the blood can drain from the tail along the spine and from the upper sections of the meat (picture a fish swimming downward and just hold it that way). If you hold it completely straight tail up head down, the blood will collect in the "shoulder" of the fish in front of the spiny dorsal fin, which in my opinion is some of the best meat.

The deckies will bleed the fish by just ripping the gills out and throwing it in the hold. This works just as well because the heart is not cut and is still able to pump blood. The fish will continue flopping around in the hold while the heart pumps the blood right out through the broken gill. probably the best way, but its messy as hell.

I was in Costa Rica kayak fishing and a guide showed me this method for subdueing LARGE fish on a kayak. He poured a FEW drops of Coke Cola into the fishes mouth and that is all she wrote. INSTANTLY! Try it. And as he told me Fanta does not work - ONLY COKE!

Make you wounder what the hell were drinking.
