I'm going camping and want to bring my crab/lobster hoop. There is a lagoon just south of Carlsbad State Beach and at the entrance there are some rocks. Here's a link to a Google satellite view of the location: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=south+carlsbad+state+beach,+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.001301,96.328125&ie=UTF8&ll=33.08727,-117.313018&spn=0.001294,0.00294&t=h&z=19&iwloc=B&om=1. Does this look too shallow for crabs? Is it even worth trying? The tide is really low in the photo, I'm pretty sure it gets a little bit deeper. Does anybody know a better place near here? Thanks :)

Keep in mind I've never hooped for crabs or lobster in that particular spot you linked, but I have fished there in the past. The water often flows hard through there, and frankly I would be very surprised anyone could manage to get hoops out without some weighting put in them to hold them down (besides the problem of getting fouled on the rocks). It's a great spot for a couple different eatable species of fish, but I'm not so sure about hooping there...IMO.

I would think you need to find a pier or at least the inner facing side of a breakwall jetty to be able to reasonably hoop.

Hope this helps in some way shape or form!

hey gavin 310 .The curent in the mouth of lagoon is strong. You could try O'side pier or o'side harber pier only 10 minutes away.If you go back to the every east end of lagoon ,there are very large rays 60lbs plus abd a few other types of fish. there is good surf fishing all around the state park. Tight lines and grreat bendo.

Awesome, that's what I was planning on doing and I'm glad to hear you recommend it. I'm also going to hit up the lagoon and try for some halis.

For halis use live smelt.Snag them close to northern brigde by gravel spot.Throw in some bread and go for it. A local I met last summer caught a 38 incher cloes to the floating cages. Also it has been many yaers .but the jettie where the warm water comes out of power plant ,lots of different fish some with good size. Good luck have fun and great catch.
