Hello Socal Fisherman...I'm new to this page and have quite a few recent pics and stories to share. I've lived here in SoCal about 2 years now and have found a new love in saltwater fishing. Not new to fishing I grew up in Chicagoland, miles from any saltwater body, but a very active freshwater fisherman I have landed some decent size largemouths, muskies and northern pikes.......But never had I imagined living close enough to the ocean to fish at least once a week and landing some of the fish that I have caught.

Me and my buddie took his boat out in the beginning of December to Huntington Harbor for a Night Launch and some harbor fishing. We ancored ourselves on the edge of a deep channel comming into the harbor and we began fishing. I was using my new Sealine 40h with my Penn international 6'6" rod with 40lb yozuri line, a 2 oz egg sinker and a #7 circle hook with whole squids. With rays and sharks as my intentional catch I seemed to put myself In a great position to land this HUGE batray after about a 20 minute fight. It hit hard and began spooling my 250+ yards of line, I began to notice my line getting pretty short in supply so I tightened the drag to the point where it was barely giving and horsed this monster from his mad b-line dash. It almost pulled me in the water but I managed to start pumping him back in my direction, using one hand high on the rod, the rod end buried in my gut and my other hand on the crank. After about 20 mins this ray finally was withing about 15 feet of our boat and began circling the boat in a shark fashion. My buddie came over with the light after winding our other 4 poles to see if we could catch a glimpse of this monster that now had circled the boat 3 or more times and just as we were both leaning over to see what it was, the huge bat ray charged at us and began to jump out of the water strait at us less than 4 feet away. It scared the living ***** out of us, at that point we didn't know what it was, and we almost both went over the other side of the boat. Finally we got it to the side of the boat for a good look. WOW, this ray was over 5-6 feet from wingtip to wingtip and its head was about the size of 1.5 very large rotweilers heads. I tried to lean over the boat to pick it up for a good picture and couldn't even get it more than a quarter out of the water. I would estimate the weight to be over 150lbs in comparison to picking up a decent sized adult male. Here are some of the pictures and videos that we did get before we released this beautiful animal. I was sore for about 3 days after fighting this thing. It felt like I went thru hell with a new personal trainier.ray1.jpg[/attachment:91e2a]ray2.jpg[/attachment:91e2a]

I miss my ray fishing days. All except for getting a stinger in my hand. LOL

We used to go down to Los Alimistos bay at night and fish for the rays using 6 and 8 # test. The biggest we got in weighed 55 pounds on 8 pound test. What a blast that was.

It was too big to bring aboard the boat, so we broke it off at the surface.

I think someone has the pics from that trip, but I cannot find the thread anywhere. :|

I'll keep looking. Maybe we'll have to schedule a fishin' mission some time in the near future.

I don't want to sound like a hater but that is no 150 pound bat ray. Its not 6 feet wide and I highly doubt it peeled 220 yards of line off your reel. I am what some would could call... a Professional Mudd Marlin Fisherman... PMMF for short. I have been intentionally catching bat rays for 10 years. I went to mexico and caught a 110 pound sailfish which was a blast but nothing ever fought as hard as a few rays I have caught up here in the SF bay. Bat rays are the most fun I have ever had. Ive caught rays with 3 steel leaders on them, one with a hair raisers with 100 feet of power pro attached to it, and some of the biggest bat rays in California guaranteed. I can tell by that photo its maybe 50 pounds, and thats generous. I have caught what We believe to be a possible 100 pounder. Took me a half an hour and unlike you so cal fisherman, I wasnt sore because I been catching them like a man since, since I was a youngin. I just got a lil heated when i saw this post claiming a 150 pound record book bat ray. If it was 150 pound why didnt you drag it to a dock get it out of the water and get some real pics. Your wearing gloves cuz your hands are to soft?...I come home soaked in ray slime stinking like squid like Yii.

To sum it all up, your pic speaks for itself. your hand is almost as big as its head.. it is clearly no 150 pounder. It would be cool to see who has the most skill...Norcal PMMFs or Socal PMMF's. Holler at yo boi.

Now take a look at this..If you got something even remotely close to this then lets talk. Im 6' 1" 200 pounds. Those are 2x8 planks. The ray is 8 planks long. 8x8 = 64 inches = 5.33 feet wide.

Thats not cool GrandStreetPierCrew your post was just hating on Pistolpete he posted a good report. You are just bashing his report saying his fish is a lot smaller and how you likely doubt it peeled 220 yards of line out how would you know if it did or not and who cares of a glove it was probably cold.

Lol thanks for summing up my post. What fun would forums be without Flames? Since I have caught hundreds of bat rays in my lifetime I can tell what is and what is not a big one. I can tell that, from experience, pistolpetes bat ray is not 150 pounds. A 150 pound bat ray is like catching a 1200 pound marlin, its a rare occourance. You can just tell when a fish is big in most pictures, and that my friends is not a 150 pound bat ray.

GrandStreetpier,

This is where you "jumped the shark" and show how little you actually know about the specie, which also speaks to the likelihood you don't fish for them as much as you purport.

A 150 lb bat ray is NOT a "rare" occurence. There's a group of guys that regularly fish mud marlin off Shelter Island (east of the public pier), and I have personally seen 100lb+ bat rays being pulled up. While I do not target them per se, over the years as an incidental catch, I have cut off easily a dozen 50lbers at the pier itself. The fact of the matter is that they are a dime-a-dozen, and take little skill to get them to bite.....but I do agree they are fun nevertheless to bring in.

i got to agree with Sansou on this, as that isn't the case here in SoCal, maybe up north the batrays are smaller!

As far as his fish not being 150 pounds? One thing I do know is that fish is a lot bigger then the 55 pounder we caught. It's probably between 150-100 pounds, but GSPC i'm sorry to burst your bubble but to me the batray in your picture looks actually smaller then the one that Pistolpete caught. Is there some jealousy going on? Hmmmmmmmmm

Oh ok, so ur telling me you regularly catch 150 pound bat rays. Do you know what kind of tackle it takes to catch a ray that big? I never once said they are hard to get to bite a piece of squid. So find a quote where I said they are hard to get a bite. When it stops raining I will provide proof with a scale of what a 20 pound ray looks like, a 40 pound ray , and so on. 150 pounders are not a dime a dozen, show some proof. Anyone who has ever caught a big ray can tell pistole petes fish isn't over 50. The only way we will find out is if we get some pics on a scale. You cant just catch a ray, not pick it up, and say its 150 pounds. My pic provides some scale, 64+- inches long. But 100+ pounders are not a dime a dozen. You guys should be happy with this entertainment i have given you in this thread.

It was around 80-100 lbs. 5.33 feet wide. I know this because I pulled it out of the water by its head holes and it was heavier than a 65 pound bag of cement. You can see in the pic how thick its body is, look at my reel, my feet, my hand in comparison. At the time we took the pic I wasnt thinking about getting good details but I should have. Its most def a larger than average ray we catch up here in the sf bay.

Size: To six feet across and over 200 pounds; a 240pound bat ray was said to be taken from Newport Bay in 1957. Most bat rays caught off piers are under 50 pounds, but many in excess of a hundred pounds are caught every year.(I've seen pictures of a 176-pound bat ray from the Newport Pier and a 175-poundbat ray from the Aliso Beach Pier.)

The said record from what i am finding for California is 181 lbs

Acually on that other website you linked to, there is a picture of a 120 pound batray, and the way it is, the head looks very similar to petes batray.

Personally I think his batray looks bigger then the one you posted, but then again you are the professional, not me, as I've only caught one at 55 pounds, which is what it weighed on the digital scale, and Pete's batray is a lot bigger then that batray. But then again I don't know much on the topic I guess, since I haven't caught one in the last year.

Well i've been spooled many times by batrays, so has my friends. We have had nights fishing the harbors where all 4 of us have been spooled. Some of us were fishing with 6 and 8 pound test, while others were fishing with 15 and 20 pound test. If they couldn't turn those rays on 20 pound test, and they got spooled, I think he could have almost been spooled too. It all depends on the reel size and how much he had on it.

It was around 80-100 lbs. 5.33 feet wide. I know this because it was as big as my head and it was heavier than a 65 pound bag of cement. You can see in the pic how thick its body is, look at my reel, my feet, my hand in comparison. At the time we took the pic I wasnt thinking about getting good details but I should have. Its most def a larger than average ray we catch up here in the sf bay.

I just cant see someone catching a ray, any size for that matter, with light trout poles and reels. I have burned many reels catching rays, i think they are the most destructive fish on earth! I am open to the idea but 6-8 pound test I think if you got it on video, it would be something amazing.

Dang....the Portillos post was the best by far...I found that place as soon as I moved to Cali...the only place that actully can make a real Chicago Hot dog out here, and one of the only places that even knows what an Itallian beef is....I love Portillos!! I still get looks when I ask for a large "pop" though...nobody says that out here in Cali...

Well I checked out the picture of the 184lb ray and mine was very close to that in size. I know it's very hard to tell from the pictures I took, but look at it this way( ever seen a picture of someone holding there hand out and someone further back looks like there standing in their palm?) This is similar to the pictures that I took if you notice the size 7 circle hook in the fishes mouth...my hand holding the hook remover was actully about 14-16" away from the ray in the pictures so of course its going to look not as big as if i put my hand right up to the ray. Try holding a basketball in your right hand and hold your left hand 14 inches in front of it and have someone snap a picture...your hand is going to look as big as the basketball is round in the photo...its ok for the haters to bash the ray I landed, I know what I landed and don't care what others have to say about it. I simply put the pics up and joined the forum to relate with other socal fisherman. The mouth alone on the ray was big enough to fit 4 large male fists side by side in and the wingspan was wider than our boat bottom was wide (the bottom is 5') I have worked out quite a bit in the past and also worked construction so I am pretty good at knowing the amound of weight I could lift and this ray was definitly heavier than 100 lbs. When I tried to lift it out of the water I could only get about 1/3 of the ray out of the water without pulling somthing in my back. I have a sealine 40h reel with 40lb yozuri line and it was loaded with about 300 yards of line, so yes the ray did almost spool me in the first initial run and I've had this happen a number of times with rays so Dude thats making negative comments obviously doesn't know how rays hit bait. Every one I have ever caught bites slow, the line and bait start gliding slowly and as soon as you set the hook the ray takes off fast enought to seem like the reel drag should be smoking....I don't take offence to ignorance though...so if ya wanna poke fun...cool...more power to free speech...I thank everyone for there posts, good or bad, and look forward to horsing more of these things soon. I'm going to see if I can find the crappy quality videos of the ray....Ill post them if I can.

Lets end this conversation right now - (though it is hilarious, especially the pics of the crew and the cars in the back). I really like the line of "the mouth was big enough to fit four large male fist side by side".....this line reminds of another line from a movie

"And this one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute in my...."

After looking at the pics a lot more closely, I have come to the conclusion that the batray in question weighs around 55 lb.s.
