I'm not an expert on this, but I've caught fish from the surf in the Malibu area, Laguna Beach/Orange County area and also in the Oceanside/San Diego area and ate them (mostly barred surf perch.) Now that's not saying it was safe, but I live in the Manhattan Beach/El Segundo/Marina del Rey area, and I know it's at least safer than fish from there. To drop some names, Zuma Beach or Surfrider Beach in Malibu, Crystal Cove State Beach in Laguna Beach, and South Carlsbad State Beach in the OC area.

I wouldn't eat anything caught from the surf around here.

KaliDawgFan, I get people all over the place saying it's 100% OK to eat anything from the surf and then other people saying no way. It's really frustrating actually =(
