Hey guys and girls,
Today was the well-anticipated trip aboard the Coroloma out of Ventura Sport fishing with the boys and girl (lol) from 976 Tuna, along with a few of us from BBFNN. We only had one no-show from our group, which at this point does not concern me anymore. For the rest of my group, thank you very much for another GREAT trip out on the water!
Woke up bright and early at 2:00 am, got ready, and headed out the door by 2:20 am. Erick was already outside waiting for me, so we loaded our gear into my truck, and off we went to pick up One_Leg and my brother-in-law Ron. By the time everyone was picked up and loaded, we were on the road heading to the landing by 315am. For being such an early morning, we were all in very good moods, due to the fact that once again, we would be making a fishing trip together. (Contrary to popular belief, we get these trips together to basically hang out, spend time together, have fun, and leave all of our stresses and worries on land. Whether or not we catch fish, all is good with the world out on the water). 104 miles and $800 worth of gas later (I have an F250), we arrived at the landing at 500 am sharp. One of my concerns about this landing, since I have never fished out Ventura, was the parking. My truck is very long, and I usually have to take two spots. This lot is HUGE, so anyone with concerns about parking due to large vehicles, do not worry when fishing out of Ventura Landing. We all jumped out of the truck, got our gear ready, and waited for others to arrive for the trip. Well, 520 am rolls around, and no one else has shown up. I called the Coroloma office, and they informed me that I was on the wrong side of the lot. FYI people, do NOT go by the signs on the side of the road leading you with arrows to “Sport fishing”, they are wrong. The woman in the office told me that she needs to contact the Harbor, because they are old signs. Where you need to be is Dock C, and you will know that you are in the right lot buy the large “Lighthouse” looking building in the shops area. So we headed back down the road, saw the Frito truck and others, and knew we finally were at the right place. First person I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to was MikeDaGuy, a regular on 976 tuna. He gave us a heads up on where the dock is that we need to be, and we headed on down and waited to be boarded.
The deckhand called us down at appx 545 am, we all boarded the boat, stored our gear, and waited for the morning announcement on where we would be fishing and recommended set ups for the day. BBFNN today consisted of myself, Juan, Osiito, One_leg, Ron, and Erick. We had ambassadorhawg on the boat with us, great to meet you mike!! I hardly saw you during the day, i guess you were slaying on another part of the boat.... I haven’t been on this boat since I worked on it years ago when it was at LA Harbor Sport fishing, back then called Ports O Call sport fishing. The first thing I noticed was that what used to be the bunkroom, was now a fairly nice size galley. We made our rounds, introducing ourselves to Team 976 Tuna, including fishing Guru Kenny Mac, Pam, Jason Lopez, Ricky Ray, Tuna Boy, B-Rad, and Mike Da Guy, only to name a few. Crew today was Capt Chris, Ray on deck (sorry, deck #2, I forgot his name, and Mandy in the galley (this may be wrong too, forgive me guys, very, very long day!!) Chris informed us that we would be fishing the Domes, appx 2 hours outside the harbor. He recommended 12-16 oz of lead, with a 2-hook ganion tied above. We would be fishing today in 300-360 feet of water today. So we all rigged up, ordered breakfast, and socialized until we reached our first drift area.
We arrived at our first drift area appx 2 hours later, got set up on the starboard side (another FYI guys, when drifting, make sure you have the “wind in your face”), then Chris made the announcement to ‘Let em go!!” I tried fishing the better part of the morning with 8 oz “Other” jigs, a.k.a. ghetto fly jigs. The guys fishing the ganions were picking slowly on the larger quality rockfish. So, after 2 hours of the skunk, I broke down and decided to go slumming (this is a joke ganion fisher people) with the rest of the passengers….fish the ganion. My set up consisted of a 16 oz torpedo sinker, two dropper loops with #2/0 Long Shank hooks, tied onto a 40 lb mono leader, which was connected by a swivel to 65lb Spectra, a Calstar 800M, and an AVET JX 2 speed. I finally picked off a couple of fish. Conditions were kind of tough today, there were times that we had NO drift, which is what you DON’T want when fishing rockfish. Do not get me wrong, the weather, after the morning *** kicking we got, finally laid down and turned out to be a beautiful, warm day. Anyway, Ricky Ray come over and asked us if wed like to try some of the Gulp! product that he had. We accepted his gracious offer, and each grabbed one out of the bag and hooked them on our bottom hooks. I believe that they were called “Nuclear Chicken”, in Shrimp pattern. Well, after this trip, I am sold on those Gulp! Throughout the rest of the day, I was slow picking very nice quality rockfish on the bottom hook with the Gulp! The hook right above it with squid never got touched at all. Also, Juan, aka Cappo, hooked and landed a NICE VERMILLION ROCKFISH on his Gulp! Nuclear chicken “jerk shad”. I capped the above rockfish name because they tend to be called “Red Snapper” which irritates me. Red Snapper are an East Coast fish. So please, all you new guys, the “Reds” we catch, are Vermillion Rockfish, NOT Red Snapper.
Throughout the rest of the day, we all picked off some very nice quality rockfish. On the last drift, One_leg hooked and landed another very nice VERMILLION ROCKFISH on the Gulp!, enough to make Cappo sweat about maybe not getting the JP. LOL!!! It was quite funny, but at the end of the day, Cappo did in fact win the boat JP, with One_Leg coming in a close second!! BBFNN had it sewed up today, great reppin’ boyz!!! Jason Lopez got the deal of the century, and w had another great time out on the water. It was great to change it up a bit, and also to meet new people. We arrived back at the dock at appx 5pm, BBFNN went and got some Ice Cream, chilled, and talked about some of the days events before jumping in our vehicles to start the long drives home for us! Thanks again everyone!!!
