Just wondering if anybody else has been cited on 395. I was up a few weeks ago around Ridgecrest and was cited for going 71 mph. Couldn't believe they were that ticky tac. Are the HP always like this on 395 or was Officer Herrera just having a bad day?
Put a damper on my fishing trip but still enjoyed it.

isn't that the 70 mph zone? I've never been cited, I usually put the cruise control at 75 in the 70mph zones and 70 in the 65 zones. I've never been cited and I've had the chippies even pass me at those speeds. I fished with a CHP who used to work the 395 and told me they almost never cite for those speeds, I think you got unlucky is all.

well, i got pulled over doing 85 a few miles out of bishop.... had a native american female cop and she was cool enough to knock my cited speed down to 75 after she saw all my camping sheeeeit and I told her i was fishing. decided to drive back up to bishop to try to fight it in the courts a few months later since she was on the opposite side of the road but to no avail... they always win. at least i got another bishop trip out of it, hehe. good luck though brother!

I thought that they could not ticket you if they were driving the other way. It could just be if there is a barrier. Im not sure.

Always slow down for the posted speed limits around towns. That's what a CHP officer told me over 15 years ago and I've not received a ticket since.

They also have special enforcement zones and will give tickets if you have a crappy attitude.

Faulter_Mike
05-04-2007, 01:59 PM
nope, they can get you on the opposite side now. all the CHP cars on the open highways like the 395 are equipped with radar in the front of their car that is always on and ready to nail you. What sucks about getting nailed right outta bishop too, is that it makes it a real slow drive all the way back home since you can't risk getting nailed twice in one trip, lol.

Got my first speeding ticket ever last August right by the Crystal Geiser plant. Me and another car hit it right after the speed limit went up when you leave the town there to get around a big rig. CHP pulled us both over.

Don't be a dick is all I have to say...I was polite, didn't argue and out of there in a minute. The only question I had for the chp was whether he got us in a construction zone or not because we were right on the edge where Caltrans was doing road work.

He said that because I was not giving him lip service like the other guy was, he did not check it on my ticket but that he did on the other guy's ticket. Saved myself an extra $200 because I didn't act like a dick thank goodness.

I can relate to this thread...I got a ticket on the Friday before the opener last year just outside of Lone Pine. I was clock at 85 mph.

I admit I was kinda in a hurry so when I got the ticket, it was just my bad timing for speeding. Typically, I think if you keep your speed not to exceed 10 mph over the posted, you're somewhat safe.

On the flipside, I did an online traffic school for about $17.00 and it took about 3 hours. You don't have to waste a whole day in traffic shool listening to stupid jokes that are funny.

Google online traffic school and you'll find a bunch.

You can even do traffic school in the buff...lol

I got one going South on 395 almost to Pesronville. big downhill. He said he cited me for 90 and I was slowing down. I never saw him. He had me do a field sobriety test. I passed or failed. Not sure which, I got a speeding ticket. NO DUI.
I always slow down when i get into town. This is easy revenue for the county, so I drive the posted speed limit in town. Cruise 80 the rest of the time.

A earlier post said they thought Hwy 395 is a 70 MPH highway, that is not true, the max is 65 and has been for years. 70 MPH only applies to the interstates like the 15, 10 99 and 5 etc. 395 is not a freeway type highway and won't be in our lifetime. I drive 395 at least 25 times a year and there is nothing I hate worse than seeing people drive at 80-90 MPH, passing over double yellow lines etc. Hwy 395 is in the top 5 of the deadliest highways in this country because of idiots behind the wheel.
I have personally witnessed 6 fatal accidents over the past 20 years and every one was a speeder passing in a no passing zone.
If you drive 80-90 you deserve your ticket and healthy fine.
In my 30 year career I have picked up too many dead and mutilated bodies and made too many death notifications. Slow down when you drive 395 and enjoy the ride.

There are several sections of that HWY where 80 is a safe speed. I agree with the crossing double yellows to pass. Just stupid I got my speeding ticket and I deserved it. I told the officer to be safe and headed on home.
I am almost certain that I have seen posted signs higher than the 65 MPH you mentioned. I will have to pay closer attention next time. If I am driving during the early morning or dusk,. I always so down so I can marvel in the beauty of the mountains. (Stop looking at the MTNS look at the road you a-hole) :P

I can guarantee you will not find a 70 MPH speed limit sign on 395 In any of the counties that lead to the Eastern Sierras. Plus there is no place in this state that 80 MPH is a safe speed.

I don't want to argue but I know the Calif. Vehicle Code like the back of my hand.

There is a stretch after you get over the hill going North to Palmdale/Lancaster area on Hwy 14 that the sign is posted 70 mph.

After you get out of Mojave you must be careful going through Califonia City. There is Caltrans work there and a lot the time the speed is reduce to 55 or even lower, especially when there are men working. Speed fines double when mena are working.

I'd like to chime-in that in addition to the safety factor and get-a-ticket factor, driving fast eats gas. It probably varies with the type of car, engine etc. but if I remember correctly, your fuel efficiency drops when you go higher than, say 60mph. Please feel free to correct me.

Cheers,

due to my flexible work schedule and undying desire to avoid crowds while fishing, I typically only make that drive midweek and in the middle of the night.... usually pull into bishop just in time to get a mcgriddle and make first call at rusty's lol. But because of when I drive I only see another car maybe once every half hour or so. in this circumstance, i would definitely support the arguement that 80mph is definitely a more than safe cruising speed (i'd say the chp agree too since i have never seen them out during these hours). i would say though that one of the most satisfying feelings is watching some douchebag fly past you at 90-100 and seeing him pulled over a few miles up. middle finger out the window to those aholes every time, lol. but yeah, in general, lets take out time, put on some good tunes or have some good conversation with friends, and enjoy the most beautiful drive in the country.

The reason you don't see and CHP during the very early morning hours is because there are only 2 units on the road which also includes the roads going to death valley. My last 2 trips I never saw one CHP all the way from my home to Rock Creek, and that was driving b/t 0500/1030.
Driving on holiday weekends they put alot more units out but overall there is actually very few units on the roads in the Eastern Sierras.

To answer a previous question I am not retired CHP, but am retired after 30 years with one of the largest agencies in the country.

PS. have you ever seen a car after it hits a deer/ cow going 80 MPH. I hit a deer in 96 south of Bridgeport going 40 MPH and it did a thousand dollars damage to my Blazer.

As a side note, on a trip to Bishop in March there was some road const. S/O Lonepine with Flagmen and traffic being escorted. I was the 5th car behind the Cal trans escort with about 25-30 cars behind me. This idiot in a SUV Porsche decided he didn't want to wait and passed the entire line of cars at speeds well over 100. It made my day to see him handcuffed by Inyo Sheriff 5 miles down the road.

I am not argueing the Vehicle code. I am saying that 80 MPH in some sections of 395 is Safe and Prudent. Someone else made the same point. Alot of times, I am driving not peak hours and I dont see many cars in either direction
WE can all agree, that we need to be safe.

I agree with Joshua that there are some stretches of 395 that is "arguably" safe to travel at 80mph, but is not prudent to do so. Driving at night doing over 80 mph is even more dangerous because the night creatures come out at night to play and you have less chance (actually no chance) to brake in time. I learned it the hard way last year when a little cottontail hare hopped in front of my 80 mph dumb_ss and blew out my fog lights (luckily my wife's car and not mine  ). Had it been a deer, I don't think my car or even perhaps me would have made it. But let's face it, if you get a speeding ticket for going 1 mph over or 25 mph, a ticket is a ticket cause YOU BROKE THE LAW. A posted speed limit and a maximum speed limit are different. I believe the speed limit on 395 are maximum speed limits so even 1 mph over is fair game to CHP (but rarely given out).

Drive carefully.

There are plenty of strectches on 395 that are posted 70MPH. After living in Europe for 4 years and learning how to drive safely at 100+MPH, Some 4 lane divided on 395 one can safely drive 80MPH. Road conditions, traffic density, experience, etc. Speed usually doesn't kill but driving too fast for conditions does.

Kindly tell me the locations where you have seen 70 MPH speed limit signs on 395 in San Berdo, Kern, Inyo and Mono counties. As I said earlier I drive that road at least 25 times a year and have never seen one. I still insist that 395 does not qualify as a highway desiginated for those speeds.

There is a stretch between Palmdale and Mojave that is posted 70, but that is still the 14. When leaving Mojave, just past Primo Burgers, it's posted 65 MPH. I have slowed way down with age. I used to leave in a rush right after work, and drive all night speeding so I could get 2 hours sleep in the car at the creek. Finally I learned to sleep at home, leave about 3:00am and still have a whole day of fishing. I can hit the Auto or cruse control at 70 from Thousand Oaks and be in Bishop in 4 hours. No need to rush, the fish will be there. good fishin!

I had no idea this thread would be this involved when starting it. All I was wanting to know is if setting the cruise for 70 in a 65 usually causes a ticket for most people. If so, I will remember to set my cruise lower, I have never had the experience of being cited for 71 in a 65. Sure, I was breaking the law, but usually CHP won't bother unless your at least 10 mph over in what I've experienced. So my question is whether or not CHP on the 395 are consistent with citing people for going a few miles over the speed limit?
Thanks

I too am retired from one of the largest agencies and I pretty positive there is a stretch of 395 that is 70. I'm heading up there in two weeks, I will take a pic of the signs. I was also told directly from several CHP, including a very close friend who's a CHP that as long as you stay under 80 in most areas your safe. Obviously, if you're in a 65 or less zone then stay closer to 70 and don't pass others like an idiot..

Maybe he thought he was ticketing a fire truck

They can ticket you for exceeding the posted speed limit, or driving too fast for the conditions (traffic, visibility, weather, etc.)

Having a brass pass doesn't always work with CHP. One of my friends got a ticket just outside of Bishop. But then again, another friend got stopped by the same woman going to and coming back from Mammoth. Same trip, just outside of Bishop. Got out of it both times. :D Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

It's not the color of your ride, nor is it the make and model of you car as to why you get speeding tickets.. but it's just bad timing! It just boils down to being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The fear of getting cited act as a deterrent for those lead foots, but we all should be careful when we drive, out of an abundance of caution, not because we fear of making an expensive mistake.

On a side note:
Everyone should find an old "Yugo" (remember those tiny death-traps with 4 wheels that they called a car) and modify the engine so that you can go 80+ mph. When the police pulls you over, just say... "what are you talking about officer? (with a puzzled look). This old thing? It can't go faster than 65mph." :) :)

Remember Rodney King incident on 1992. I knew the police were lying when they said Rodney King drove 115 mph during a chase in his Hyundai Excel (the 1st generation Excel). When I heard that I was like "give me a break". Talk about hyperbole. So, one day (when I was stupid, young and in college) I took my friend's exact same hyundai excel and floored it and the top speed was 98 mph on a slight downhill on 405 freeway near UCLA. 115mph my (__|__) <----_ss. Sorry for deviating from the topic, guys.
