View Full Version : Installing a transducer

I'm going to install a transducer on the transom this week. The picture is of an identical model. I'm thinking of mounting the transducer about 6 inches to the left of the speedometer. There is a step there and I'm just wondering if the turbulence is going to cause any significant problems.

I do not believe you can mount it on that spot dude ; I think, but I am not positive - that the spot your looking at mounting it will not give you good readings. If I were you, mount it on the same spot as the tach is on the other side ; or mount it on the same side as the tach and just to the right of it maybe like and inch or two. I know that you will get a good reading there. Also, don't drill directly into the boat to mount the transducer. Get one of those mounting boards from cabelas or bass pro. Basically it is like a plastic material that you mount to the back of the boat. This way you can install things on it, without drilling extra holes in the boat. And remove the tach and install that on the board as well. When done properly, it will look good and like it was done at a good dealer. When you install the board, you can use these clips that will keep the wires flush with the board, you drill the clips into the board. This way you will not get any spray from the wires when your going fast.

dude, that is killer link with the mounting spots. That should be kept as a sticky. You could not have asked for more exact info. :appl:

Don't know if you've mounted you're transducer yet or not, but another idea is to mount it in the bottom of the hull.. not through hull, but inside. If you look up Hummingbird they have a guide to install one inside the boat. It's the way I did mine and seems to work okay. I did it this way only cuz I hated to drill a hole anywhere in the boat. I've seen plenty of boats that did, and they've had no problems. .. again, its just me. :2cents:

Yeah, I mounted it on the transom and about crapped when they called for a 5/8" hole. Hell, the biggest bit my drill can handle is 3/8. Had to break out the dremel and bore it out. I used the marine grade sealant which took about 2 weeks to fully cure. I had it out Christmas Eve and it works great. There's a little turbulence at higher speeds but nothing too bad. I thought about the through hull mount for the same reason but after talking to some guys a Angler's Marine, they advised against it so I took their word for it.
