View Full Version : Wingnut, HittsOn & Raylo Zuma Surf Safari 11/2/07

Finally got a chance to fish with Ray Lopez & Armando the Hittman. We all left from my house early and got to Zuma Beach at high tide. Since Ray, Armando & myself are new to this surf fishing thing, we stuck to the basics and started out targeting Perch. The ammo of choice was of course the always reliable Gulp Camo Sandworms. What can I say, we had an wide open bite for the first couple of hours. Ray & I were fishing side by side in our waders pulling Perch out of the surf left & right and laughing our butts off. Then it was pretty steady until we left at about 2:00pm. Hitts had no waders & made the mistake of trying to wade in with shorts. He ran out really fast... it was cold! Fishing from the beach, Armando still managed to bag quite a few himself. Ray had his 11 foot surf rod cast way out past the surf all baited up & was determined to catch a Shark. No shark this time but he did managed a very large chunk of seaweed that got us all excited. Ray & I tried throwing LCs but for some reason today, there were so much seaweed everywhere. We were getting caught up with every cast. :mad:

My exciting moment came when I did manage to hook onto something big & was fighting it for about 5 minutes on my 6lb test & it finally broke off. :Neutral: There was a small crowd of passerby that stopped to see me battle the fish & were almost as disappointed as me when I lost it. I would like to think that it may have been my first Hali but we'll never know. It was a strong sluggish tugging motion kind of a fight, not the rapid tapping action. Took my drag quite a few times in steady short runs. Damn Armando, I almost got you a big one for your seafood soup. lol It would've been with Halibut instead of Perch.

I'm starting to get a better feel for this surf fishing thing. Absolutely love it & I think Ray and Armando is getting the bug too. The funniest part of the day is when Armando's bait bag was attacked by a Black Labrador Retriever and it carried off his entire bag of Sardines & ate it all while we stood & watched. The dog just bummed rush our area & snatched the bait and ran off... you should have seen the look on Armando's face, priceless! :ROFL:

I had a great time today just being out there in good company. Still in search of my fist Hali... hopefully soon, wait & see, very soon! :Twisted: :Wink:

The Perch bite was pretty much wide open... fun stuff. See all the seaweed on the shoreline? There were a lot more in the water.

Ray, your GF is very talented, she sculptured your face out of sand while sitting on the beach. :Wink:

We finished off the day with a BBQ, playing pool & watching Sunday Night Football at my place. Hitts was happy that his Steelers won. Darn good BBQ Armando, your posse sure knows how to grill. :Big Grin: I just have one word... SPICY! :EyePop: The "O" ring will suffer later I'm sure. :LOL:

Better get yourself some waders Hitts..... Ill bet it was cold standing in the water like that!

Always alot of 'salad" in the water after a storm moves thru in that area.....

LMAO....i hope RAYLO dont do the same with the hali spot i took him to.. :bang: .....i also agree, tide does not look high at all....and be careful with them damn perch, when i 1st was a noob at surf fishing i used to take them home,..UNTIL i found parasites on them :evil: ...it grossed me the hell out, and i never again will bother to take them home....im gonna hit the surf this weekend on a new spot for hali's thats producing,...stay tuned... :twisted:

I blind folded them & led them to the spot and made them swore a Team 57 oath of secrecy. :lol:

When we first got there at about 7:00am the tide was almost up to the backyard of the houses.

He didn't even last five minutes in that water... he got out quick!

That's good to know... it was kinda tough fishing thru all that weed, but the Perch didn't seem to mind.

it was good times out there fishing with wingnut and hitts

we slayed them perch all day long

one thing i did notice was the sea weed came in spurts we first got there and it was sea weed free and then a few hours the sea weed was everywhere and then it went away again and came back right b-4 we left

Hey wingnut we have to fish again man you are good people, sorry we could not stay longer we were both really tired.

The surf bug bit me hard i'm starting to really enjoy it :banana:

I heard Hitts is going to do one of his famous "Moonlight" events at that beach now! I'm going to show up just for the BBQ alone!! Ha ha!!

Yeah Rich, Dana thinks that it was a Hali or maybe a Ray&#46;&#46;&#46; oh well, I'll get it next time&#46; It was tough slinging the LCs with so much veggies in the water&#46; And yes, Hitts can put together a mean BBQ session! &#58;D

I'll call you - i may go this weekend but if the swells hit as hard as there supposed to 15'-20' it will rearrange the structure and the fish will move offshore for a bit
